Camera: Sony DSC-F717
Location: Kirkstone Pass, Cumbria, England
Date: Feb 24, 2004

Date Uploaded: Jan 12, 2005

My son, Jack stands atop one of the summits above Kirkstone Pass, The Lake District, England.

He excitedly scrambled his way up (following me - franticly racing to get there before the sun disappeared!) and was greeted with a breathtaking panorama and a glorious sunset.

His young, exploring spirit was ignited by the view and his climbing achievement.

I think that only one thing could make this shot better (my opinion).
If you could have got your son to look at the sunset so the sun lights up his face. (again just my opinion) Great shot!

I don't think the kid should face into the scene. He looks like saying "Hey Daddy! Look at what I found!"
It adds to the image in my opinion.

Indeed beautiful and moving. My preference is for just a hair under on the saturation, but never mind me, the zest of this image simply soars. Very good work! Congratulations on your top 10 finish.

The boy looking back to call upon his companions makes it so real and true. A beautiful capture at a wonderful destination that is so full of wonders. Congratulations Jon.

Jon, your photo not only captures a great scene, I feel it captures your boy's exhurberant spirit, too. Nicely done!

Thanks for the comments. I knew his face direction would cause unrest! It did for me for a while, but I weighed it up and went for it anyway, despite the flaw.

Nice shot... who says kid pictures can't be great?

Hey , thank for comment on both times. So, you beat me about .02 %. I had you beat about 10 minutes before the voting period ended. However, I was shot back down and stayed. Bummer. It would have been my 1 "10" shot. However, I'm happy...just thew this image in there for the game.

He's looking the wrong way :) Other than that - lovely shot - great stuff.

Having the subject facing away from the sunset -- calling companions to come see? -- adds some tension to an otherwise very pretty but static shot.

This is gorgeous. I would have loved to see a little tighter view on the boy, but this choice does give a sense of vastness. 9.

Only one complaint (which you've probably had 300 times already!) ... I wish the kid was facing into the scene. Otherwise, absolutely beautiful. Well done.

Great composition, precious capture. I wish we could see more detail in the face.

The more I look, the more I like. Excellent time of day to shoot. It gives you that nice warm evening light. The little guy gives you a great sense of scale here. It reminds me of being young and seeing everything out before me. It also reminds me that I'm never too old to be a kid. Thank you for the reminder. 9

awww. this is a great shot. this is exactly the best way to use children in an image. it's just too damn bad you caught him looking out of the image rather than the other way! all the same, this is beautiful, and i hope you have this hanging somewhere so that it can be appreciated on a regular basis. good luck with this and the challenges yet to come!

Lovely oversaturation to bring out the feeling of the natural light. The kid makes this shot truly special. 10

This is a great image with a great title. Maybe just a tiny bit over saturated on the boys face. Beautiful though. 9

Absolutely wonderful landscape. The golden cast from the sunset is simply beautiful. The little kid adds to the composition nicely, and his satisfied expression is a nice reflection of the mood you have created with this shot. Very uplifting. 9.

The light, tonality, detail are marvellous. I've yet to find shots of kids looking happy particularly appealing, but that's beside the point. I think the overall composition is a touch weak - your chosen framing/cropping, for me, unblances what could have been a tremendous shot: it doesn't quite have the flow one would really want.

Amazing how one day he will be as big as the pile of stones. Nice work.
His pose and especially his looking out of the frame like this keep me from scoring it higher than a 7.

This image has incredible colours...I would have liked it a little better if junior was looking to the right over the landscape you captured. Still a great shot. Good Luck.

This is so beautiful. The colors are wonderful and the addtion of the little boy makes if more than just a nice sunset/sunrise picture. I would kill to get a shot like this with my little boy. Well done!

Oh the feeling of reaching the top !!
Nicely expressed in the orange glow of the late evening ..early morning? light.
If this was late evening..I hope you got down before darkness fell :)
Makes me long to get back up among the Munros.

Perfect title! What story! How often does a subject looking off frame actually work? Lighting, texture, dramatic color all work to success here.

Very solid composition which obeys the classic rules. The colour range is awesome. It would have helped if the child would have turned to the right, because the flow in the image IMO is from left to right. -8

Besides the landscape being stunning, you managed to add the human element into the photo in not only an unobtrusive, but in an inspiring way. Great shot and good luck.
