This is so fabulous!!
10/16/2006 12:48:24 AM
I gave this a 10 during the challenge, and just posted to the "all time favorite" thread that it's my favorite of my 4 dozen or so on the site.

Sometimes I miss rowing, although the early morning wakeup and the freezing cold would probably change my mind if ever I started again hehe. Fantastic shot, one often forgets the off-water synchronicity while focusing on the classic togetherness of the actual stroke itself. This photo helps show that a crew has to be entirely together to do well, right down to carrying the boat and pushing off before rowing to the start.

Great capture! A well deserved placing amongst a highly competitive field.

Such a fantastic capture!!! I think photography is really all about capturing little moments like these. I love it! Should have ribboned.

This is an image that should have ribboned. It has all the ingredients of a winner and to me it is the most impressive in the challenge because the subject matter trumps all. Congratulations on your top 5 finish. This is indeed an image with a life that will outlive the challenge.

i keep running across these stellar shots that i missed in the voting...it will no doubt take me the better part of 2005 to find them and comment on them all. :)

congrats on such a wonderful photo--i too wonder why this didn't ribbon, go figure. and the sunglasses don't even phase me, i think they add a bit of character to the girls, and a splash of modernity to an otherwise timeless photograph. beautiful work.

It blows my mind that this picture wasn't #1, sunglasses and all. Many congratulations anyway.

Thanks everyone for your nice comments. Oh how I wish they all took off their sunglasses, but I didn't notice until later. The soft focus was an attempt to make a more traditional portrait out of a sports shot. Normally I don't like soft focus either but I was trying something and I think it worked. In the prints I've done at a large size it's less noticeable.

Given that stroke seat (closest to the camera) is my girlfriend, the composition and the processing made sense. This image represents the calm before the storm...both the training session and their lead-up to racing later that summer in Spain. I have many photos from the trip there, and I might post some soon and tell the story.

This, I got lucky. It's an honour to be in such company.

Classic symmetry. I'm not big on soft focus most times, but this adds a certain mood. Bump up. 10. One of the best of the best

Doesn't meet the challenge: zero.
; )

Great view - love their poses (candid I assume). There's a softness to this that doesn't do a great deal for me. It works, although it suggests something a bit more evocative/romantic than this subject.

This is great- love the symmetry and the softness juxtaposed against the muscularity and metal and plastic. That border sure is overkill for me though.

I thought I'd already commented on this. Powerful, wonderful, and massively sellable. I get a sense of a soft focus treatment from it, which I really don't either like or find appropriate - it feels like an attempt to make a great shot somehow 'feminine' in a cliched manner. It's a great moment however, it just works against the sense of purpose and preparation and the coming trial.

Perfect symmetry all the way through here. This is all about balance. Balance in the tones, balance in the boat, teamwork at it's finest. I like the slightly soft feel to the image. This is a great team portrait. 10

This is my top rated shot this challenge, great job! Good capture of the symmetry and is enhanced by the softness. Frame works well.

wonderful image. really captures the grace and the essence of teamwork that makes this sport. great bokeh, and nice choice for bw. i really hope this does well for you in the challenge, although i'm quite sure no score from dpc will ever do this image justice...

beautiful study, a moment of calm before concerted effort, love the lines of their shoulders/upper arms, and the incline of their heads. 9

Very classic looking.....what about an extreme crop removing the right hand side at the mid-line of the nearest oarswoman (stroke?). It might really make their gazes striking.

This is such a wonderful photo all the way around. The composition is EXCELLENT, their looks, the lines, the water... all beautiful. And the softness of the treatment really gives it that something special. PERFECT! up'd to a 10

Nice photo but I find the border to wide which makes it distracting. I like the B&W look and the soft focus adds a lot to this photo. well done and keep up the good work in 2005. <7>

A perfect photograph. I have given one other 10, so I guess 10.5 is my only option here. I couldn't produce something like this, so it's probably presumptuous of me to critique it, but here goes anyway. Immaculate composition and framing; the photographer was in the right spot, to the millimeter. Fabulous subject; like dancers at the barre ... beautiful, graceful, athletic and concentrated. Sympathetic photographic and processing treatment. The best of the best. 10.

Timeless, as if they are just pushing oiff to do the 1920's Olympic final.
Symmetry in repetitive elements; same pose, same look, same clothes, same oars and even the shore continues it.
Great B&W, I like the softness.

Perfect timing here. The soft focus is tremendous...lends the image a feeling of serenity, which is really ironic seeing as these young women are about to engage in one of the most physically demanding sports going. 9.
