Just beautiful.
This spot would be good to do a series..Summer/Winter/Spring/Fall. Pretty area.

Congrats on your ribbon. This shot was one of my favourites in this challenge. I like the symmetry of the scene and the soft tones of the water falling down. Good you chose bw.

I can understand how you see it this way, I left a comment on Sandymaya`s submission (which also depicted the same system of handcranked lock gates but concentrated more fully on the winding gear) saying that I found it a very tough choice on how to compose the image.
I finally decided to go with this set up which shows the full system with the added attraction of the water cascade.
The mechanism for controlling the water level is shown more fully on the distant gates. (The small black boxlike objects with spindles attached)

Paul....thanks for the clarification (much appreciated).

For those of us that are familiar with lock gates it is a very good example of mechanics.
The gates operate in a system of raising or lowering canal barges from one section of canal to another by flooding or emptying.
Hope this clarifies,
Paul.

I'm really pleased to see this image win. It SO stood out from most of the others for its much more meditative approach to the challenge. It tells a "mechanical" story very well, and adds a purity of composition
and tonality that makes it stand out as a "pure" photograph. Well done!

Robt.

Well done Gordon - a very senstive approach to the challenge, offering a more 'hidden' kind of mechanics.

I love the "balance" to this shot. great job on bringing out a smooth water flow that sets the "feel" for the photo. Since there's so much symetry, perhaps crop out those elements which are not symetrical (top right).

i like the canal and the water effect but something is missing....maybe it needs more contrast so the tones are not so average and closely aligned.

12/29/2004 02:20:40 AM
This is really, really sweet, the tonalities are so pure, the composition is so locked-in, the flow of the water is so palpable. I appreciate also that this one is outside the box, not just one more of the same thing. There's a LOT of gears, sprokets, and clocks in this challenge...
