Challenge: Broken (Advanced Editing II)
Camera: Canon EOS-10D
Location: Playa del Rey, CA
Date: Dec 11, 2004
Aperture: f/8
ISO: 100
Shutter: 3 sec
Galleries: Studio, Science and Technology
Date Uploaded: Dec 11, 2004

Took a broken lightbulb, on a piece of paper, shot from above - 3 second exposure with bounced flash, and some very slight window light.

I used a red laser pointer to "paint" the filament, and the red light from an optical mouse to produce the surrounding glow. (Naturally, with both hands full I used the camera's timer). Adjusted hues and levels to convert the red glow to yellow, and made general curve/level tweaks. Did a gaussian blur to create a softer focus. At this point, cloned out a stray hair, some dust specks and a couple of annoying reflected highlights.

Yes, I'm aware that you shouldn't be able to see the shadow of the filament or wires, but that seemed like rather a big clone.

This is by far the best of the bulb concept - I love what you've done with the filament - should do well

Revisiting.

Love the hues in this shot. The burning filament is also a spectacular effect. I imagine the timing must have been quite tricky. Is the yellow halo a postprocessed effect or was it light from the dying bulb? In any event, quite spectacular. :)

Technically very sound. Artistically as stated above. Bumping up.

Lots of broken lightbulbs. I think that this is technically a nice shot. The purples and yellows just don'e work for me in this case. The soften the impact of the image. I think that, given your title, that is what you were going for, but I would like something grittier and dangerous-looking for this challenge. Just a matter of taste so a 7

Your soft colors and great lighting make this the winner of all the NUMEROUS broken light bulb shots. (For a while I thought the challenge must say "broken light bulbs!") Nicely composed and perfect exposure. Look for the ribbon train.
