Photographer’s Notes
I was working on a photo for the Low Tech Invitational and noticed that in one of my shots I had exactly 7 seeds. Hmm … maybe this would work for Lucky 7!
The text of the letter was composed by me based loosely on a biography of Mendel. It was formatted with a handwritten font and printed on the paper from a grocery sack. The seeds are in fact dried peas. The seal is a genuine wax seal and the pen is an old pen from my wife's caligraphy set.
In many ways this is a tribute to Gregor Mendel. His biography is interesting … as a newly minted priest; he was assigned to a parish but failed in the role of parish priest. He was then assigned to teach but had such a great fear of taking tests he became severely ill at the prospect of taking them. He did not pass them to become a certified teacher. At the direction of the Church, he turned his attention to the study of what would become genetics and discovered the properties of genes, dominant and recessive traits and so on. His work was ignored during his lifetime and was recognized only after his death.
So here for your viewing pleasure … “Mendel’s Legacy.”

Great entry with a facinating subject. Thought this would score higher. Very well done!

Beautiful. The pen's a little distracting, seemingly out of focus and the paint flaking off it bugs me, but it's a minor detail. Overall a wonderful shot and better than the competition for the story value. 9.

Rich colors, well executed study of this revolutionary, evolutionary monk's work. Good luck on this genetic still life....

I love the depth and clearity. Please explain how this relates to the challenge. Since I am not familiar with Mendal I'm not getting it.

Gregar Mendel? Never heard of him. I'm ignorant, I guess. Nice composition. I like the look of the pen, but I don't like that the text doesn't help me understand what Mendel dicovered.

cute, but I don't think he would have written in English...

Wow. This feels 3D. The glare on the pen is a little harsh, other than that I do like this, it draws me in somehow.

Ahh, the Mendellian pea experiments. As a biologist I like your idea a lot, but wonder how many others will make the connection. Creative shot!

Excellent photo idea! I love the effectiveness of the lines in the letter and the random feel of the seal, peas and pen.
