This image is very special to me. It is an outtake of the session where I realized that photography was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
It was my first studio shoot.
It was my first time using lights.
It was my first nude shoot.
I didn't have any lights, so I asked a professional friend of mine if he'd be interested in helping me. He brought all his gear, and help me set up the lights. He helped me see what the lights were doing, how to affect changes, remove/add shadows/highlights. I was fascinating. Elated. Exhilarated. My wonderful model, who initially was apprehensive about doing this, truly embraced her nudity and accepted her natural beauty. The whole experience was transformational.
The model is Caryn West, who would later pose for me for this shot.
I was also with Caryn when I discovered my passion within my passion: after doing her headshots one afternoon, she asked if I'd take a picture with her of her old dog, whom she feared was not long for this world. Poor Jonesy was so arthritic that he couldn't get up from where he was laying, so I told Caryn to lie down next to him. As I joined them on the floor, and started shooting them together, I realized I wanted to this type of photography more than anything else. And my particular type of conceptual pet and person photography was born.
I guess you could say that Caryn was my very first muse, and my personal patron saint. |
