I could have sewn this dress in less time.....
My mother is a sculptor, so my upbringing was...interesting. We'd come home from school to find my mom in her studio, wearing a mask, goggles, a bandana over her hair, wielding a 14" chain saw, covered from head to toe in sawdust. No brownies for us...
She had (and still has) this habit of seeing "art" in everything; at restaurants, as we were getting ready to leave and everyone had tossed their napkins on the table, she would freeze in place, eyes fixed on one of the napkins and study it very closely. The shape, or the shadows, or the texture would spur some sort of artistic idea in her.
Fast forward to me at the supermarket a couple of weeks ago, picking out lettuce. I picked up a beautiful head of butter lettuce and the way the light struck it, and the color, and the softness of the leaves... well, the idea that it could be a ballgown just spontaneously popped into my head.
Julia wanted to shoot with me because it was her birthday, and this seemed to be just the project for her. When I told her my idea, she was positively giddy. So here it is. A butter lettuce ballgown. Ingredients include:
Butter lettuce - front and side panels
Escarole - tail
Frisee - insert and boustier detail
Endive - boustier
Squash strips - sash and trails
Strawberry cap, tomato cap, and bell pepper stem - hat
Pomegranate seeds - necklace and bracelet

Hello from the critique club
An appealing image that contributes well to the extended challenge
What a lovely, creative and original idea. I can imagine this must have been one hard image to get together in a convincing way but that is exactly what you have achieved it does look really convincing. Altough it's a tad soft at the front it is not at all detrimental to the end result. The lighting, her pose everything just comes together lovely, well done. A well deserved high score that in any other challenge would have won outright, well done Johanna
