Cats can hold very still when they want to, and it's dark inside the barn. That worked for me. Not an exciting image, but more challenging than shooting something that couldn't move.
This is Crumpet, one of two barn cats I adopted when we bought the farm. Sadly his counterpart disappeared after a few months. He's almost always to be found IN the barn, nestled in the hay. I feed him so I don't know how good he is at catching rodents, but OTOH I haven't seen any.
