The native red squirrel is now incredibly rare in England. It has been pushed out by the imported American Grey, which carries a pox that the Reds have no resistance to. This one clearly has young in her nest as she is heavily lactating - with elongated nipple on full display.

This is the PERFECT opportunity for SUCH a fun title!

It got a 7 from me. (sorry! I thought it would help!)

Congratulations on your Red Ribbon in a very tough-competition challenge!

i read before (and I don't know if this is true) that the river ness (and later the caledonian canal) almost acts as a border between the population divide between the red and grey squirrels.

Congrats on the red for your red, Sara...and very sad to hear about the American greys carrying a pox. Our native north American reds are tough little devils who can and do chase the black and grey squirrels off all the time!

Congrats on the ribbon, one of my top picks from the challenge. Love the pose and such beautiful colors. I am always jealous when I see photographs of these squirrels, so much more interesting then the ugly grey squirrels we have here.

Squirrels are natural posers, aren't they?! Well done - congrats on the Red.

Lovely image Sarah, congrats on the Red. In Scotland we luckily still have red squirrels but only because there's an enormous effort to catch the greys before they can do any harm.

I love the image. The background looks like a stage backdrop and highlights the squirrel perfectly. I think it calls for a funnier caption, though ;-)

Clear, crisp and a little bit of a caricature due to the lack of much environmental context. I'd have preferred a bit less squirrel and a bit more environment. But who cares what I'd have preferred; it's not my picture, it's yours, and it's undeniably a very competent one. One big advantage of it being framed so closely is that I can more clearly see the irresistible resemblance to an American football lineman getting into a 3-point stance for the snap. So, that's an unexpected bonus! I was wrong & you were right. Thank you.
