Challenge: Abstract Expressionism (Minimal Editing*)
Camera: Canon EOS-1D Mark IV
Lens: Helios 40-1 85mm f/1.5
Location: Salford Quays

Aperture: f/8

Shot in the last of the evening light against an already darkening sky as the sunlight slanted at the perfect angle - this crane braced against a slip form tower block under construction cast its shadow on the building in just the right way.

Normally I would need to do quite a lot of work with curves to get this sort of contrast, tone and colour - especially since I was shooting on "faithful" mode - but the evening light gave a lot of depth and richness to the colours naturally, making this a good choice for a minimal editing entry in colour.

Editing was just a crop to square, resize and sharpen.

Hello from the critique club

An appealing image that does not meet the challenge

Great lighting Eugene it brings the building and crane out very well in a 3D way. I like your seeing and the crane shadow it all works well. This would be absolutely ideal under normal circumstances but given that Aaron strived for a flatness in his images I would say although there is an abstract element in the composition, the lighting and colour work against the challenge theme in this instance. Even had it been in mono as most of his work was, in terms of lighting it is simply ‘too good’.

You got clobbered for being "not abstract" but I don't really agree with that. I was your lone 8. This is, for me, a very powerful image, fabulous light and detail, great sense of solidity and foreboding. For me, "abstraction" doesn't HAVE to be "unrecognizable" at all, and my own entry in this challenge is analogous to yours in that it's clearly recognizable as what it is, but it plays with massing and color to be other-than-simple-recording. Admittedly, neither of us was especially "expressionist", and we paid the price for that, you more than me, but so it goes. VERY cool shot and as an architectural photographer I really appreciate what you've done here.
