Challenge: Before and After (Classic Editing)
Camera: Fujifilm FinePix S602Z
Location: Bedroom mini portable studio :)
Date: Feb 1, 2003
Aperture: F2.8
ISO: 160
Shutter: 1/12s
Galleries: Abstract, Black and White
Date Uploaded: Feb 1, 2003

Setup shot with my current pair of glasses. I just ordered a new one, so this view is out of date. :)
I wanted to try to shoot the contrast between what I see with and without my glasses on. This specific lens is -3,5. It is the best out of 29 attempts with both this and colored background.

In the background is an A4 sized paper covered in Before & After writing. It leans against a much bigger A2 white carbon (gives a better paper color). The glasses are about 2 to 2half feet (60 to 75cm) away from the paper. The camera is less then a feet (15 to 30cm) away from the lens of the glasses. Light comes from three overhead lamps.
I used Autofocus, but had to reposition the camera. The camera was stabalized on a platform. Other settings were aperture priority, manual whitebalance, +2/3 exposure compensation to prevent underexposing on all that white.

Digital processing: Manual levels, Cropped out this part, Again levels (to cause the white to blow out and make it sharper for the next step), Channel Mixer (Monochrome R20, G20, B60), Resampled (Bibubic), Unsharp mask 100%/.4/1, increased canvas size by 15 pixels with black background.
Save for the web at 100% quality.

The font used on the A4 print is RitzeyNormal point 36, a very cool art deco/jugendstil font.

Hardest thing was to get the focus right, the lens of the glasses would mostly cause it to be slightly off.

Wow! Now that's what I call a photographer's comment. I don't vote in the member's challenges so I didn't see this until it popped up on the front page of all places! Congrats.
It's such a simple shot, but very effective. I do really like that font by the way. It fits the challenge so we'll move on to technical aspects. I really like the blur vs. non blur, but it bothers me that the frames are so out of focus. I guess it's impossible to have the part inside the frames in focus and have the frames in focus, not to mention that it wouldn't make much sense since you wouldn't wear glasses that make things blurry... but it just takes a little more thought to actually figure out that what you are seeing is a pair of glasses. I really like the composition. The wide horizontal works very well. The fact that you only show part of the lens doesn't help me figure out what it is I'm seeing, but I wouldn't change that. Good even lighting, but the white does seem a little too grey. I don't know if it's the actual print on the paper or the photo, but the letters in focus have diagonal jaggies on my screen. I like the simple black frame as well. A good example of a frame that works. It is a good shot that was obviously well received. That's a great score. Good idea and good execution so I don't think there's much more I can say.

Yeeehaaaaaa!!!!
Thanks everyone!

It must have been two or three weeks ago that I said in the forums and/or in the chat that I expected to make "ribbon-quality" in a year or two from now. :)
Never expected this when I made it, I was just happy to score a 7+ and was anxious that it would just drop below it the whole week. I dreamed about a ribbon though. :)
Didn't wan't to get out of bed this morning in case it would be #4 or #5, but guess what, I got third! (/me makes funny moves with arms)

Thanks to all of you, it is also your photo's that inspire & help me. DPChallenge was the first site to really make me think about what I am doing with my camera and the critique club is a great help too.
Guess I have to do better in the future, lets say that I wan't to get a red ribbon within five years. ;)

Get the party started, drinks are on me!

This really should be #1. Who would have ever thought this up. So simple, so met the challenge, so good DOF (if you really want to call it that), so good composition, this is really neat. I like it. Sorry I can't be of any help with a good helpful comment. What can you say about a 10.

Great idea and very well done. Composition, lighting and focus are all good. The border is just right, not too thin or thick. Interesting cropping too. Overall a really good job.
