An old photograph, but one I finally got round to editing. A sequel to Dreams of the Sea
Part of a series of photographs shot for a departed friend, images of aquatic dissolution, peace in drowning and strength in human creations left to decay by water. This is actually a very symbolic image for me, the rusty forgotten chain rooted firmly in the gritty earth, separated by a crumbling but immovable concrete barrier, but being pulled always towards the dark, dark sea.
Whereas Dreams of the Sea was a wistful duotone mix of warm greys, timeless in its passive peace, the only tone in this image is true black. It's intended to evoke strength, purity, the gritty coarseness of being, but also of course the darkness underlying everything.
A memento mori, and a reminder of that little chain that sometimes tugs inside all of us in our darkest moments.
