The moonset was awesome this morning, as the sublimating clouds churned and fumed below, on the continental divide. This is a black&white conversion from an HDR blend in LrCC 2015. 01/28/16 8:52am. Canon EOS 5DmkIII, Canon EF200mm f/2.8L USM, f/16, ISO 100, [1/30s, 1/60s, 1/125s], lens focal length 200mm.

I guess it's a backhanded compliment to hear that people don't think my image looks like an HDR blend. Very backhanded! This scene was 15 stops of light between the darkest shadows and the brightest highlights. No modern camera could capture the scene in one image. Yes, it is not grainy, low contrast with surreal tones like Photomatix 2007.

On the blacks... I always leave about 5% blocked up to improve the natural look of the scene. That comes from experience. I certainly could have unblocked all blacks and the image probably would have looked more like an old style HDR.

Although I don't understand the technical mumbo jumbo like the "5% blocked...that comes with experience", it's a nice photo. The moon takes it up a notch.

This is so awesome! One of my favorites. How you caught everything in such focus! Great job!

Wonderfully dramatic scene. The HDR is used as I like to see it used, in the manner of a zone system print. I do wonder if the darkest areas need a little more structure to render to best advantage on the monitor, but I'm sure this PRINTS spectacularly well. The rendering of the clouds is absolutely palpable, I want to drift into that softness and ride the moon to another country not my own :-) Bumping to top group.

This is a beautiful landscape! Gallery quality. It is one of the nicest images in the challenge. But I don't see the tonal contrasts and textures of an "HDR" image. This challenge was a particularly difficult one to pull off, given the assignment and the varying views of what is or is not HDR.
