Isn't his camouflage... AMAZING?!

I love the way the world works.

But... I'm thinking that he's not at all obscure... now that I keep staring at him. *sigh*

*sigh again*

I can never predict what DPC voters will do.

I had two other images submitted... that I like better than this... but I suspect that they'd score even lower than this one.

I think it's that the mantis isn't perfectly clear in this image. (He/She is quite sharp and clear in the unreduced image.)

What's a girl to do??

*sigh yet one more time*

Anyway... the story is that this guy (girl??) was on our little fence. Just sittin' there.

So... I plucked some fern leaves off of the fern next to it... he/she crawled onto them, and I took them all inside and... shot them.

He/she was not inclined to perfectly align him/herself, though.

So... it was about an hour of shooting... until this happened.

And... I knew it when it happened.

That's rare.

:D

Great shot (again) Lydia! I'm not sure if I prefer your photos or your write ups - always fun to read your Photographer's Comments

In addition to being an exceptional photographer, I am beginning to think you are some kind of Critter Whisperer -- able to call in all manner of creepy crawly or amphibious creature at will to be your photographic minion. Congrats on the ribbon and your special talent with the small beasts.

Perfect for the challenge. I like the simplicity of color, it made this image stand out to me.

Terrifically in-your-face, yet still a surprise. Wonderful study. The tones and variety of greens in the ferns and mantis are lovely and satisfying. The black background capably sets it all off. Fine image.
One of three personal favorites in the challenge.
