Challenge: October Free Study (Advanced Editing II)
Camera: Canon EOS-20D
Lens: Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM
Location: Álftanes, Iceland
Date: Oct 25, 2004
Aperture: 4.0
ISO: 400
Shutter: 8 sec
Galleries: Nature
Date Uploaded: Oct 27, 2004

The houses are overexposed a little, but I couldn't do anything about it because of the bright lights that were on them, it was either getting details in the foreground and brighter aurora or details in the houses and everything else black, what would you choose? :-D

Taken with Canon EF 17-40mm f/4.0 L lens at 17mm.

In Photoshop I used levels, dodge and burn a little, unsharp mask and added the border.

Holy crap! I'm so glad I stumbled across this shot while looking through rasdub's Favorites! This is really incredible! You made the right choice editing... "what houses?!?" I don't see anything but an amazing display of nature's beauty well captured by someone with an obviously very good eye. My newest Favorite...

This is a great shot...auroras are tricky to capture, especially this cleanly. Nice colors too

Don't understand the four 1s though, very strange!

Even the photos #1, 4 & 5 got one and two 1. My photo got four 1 and no 2 :-o I think there must be some people that think that the aurora is some kind of a myth that only belongs in fairy tales and Coca Cola ads, and they must think that this green light is added in Photoshop! Ofcourse is this just done in PS, do you really believe that there can be some kind of ridiculous green lights in the skies like this!!?

hahahaaaa, aurora is something that you just have to believe, it's very real and priceless sight to experience!

Anyway, I didn't expect to be in the top 10 after the score dropped from 7.17 down to 6.8 on the second day of voting. The photo was between 6.8-6.99 most of the week, on the last day the score finally got above 7, so, I'm very happy with this result!

Many thanks for all of the comments and votings.

Check out my OFS outtakes in my portfolio, there are more aurora shots from this scene and other stuff.

Congratulations on your 6th placing. Too stunning for words that describe but can not create the feel that this image evokes on the looker.

As SPurs put it. The second I saw this it looked lie a dragon swooping in on the town. Awesome capture and work.

This has got to be one of the best aurora shots I have EVER seen (not to mention scariest - the title says it all!). National Geographic wishes they had taken this picture!

This is realy beautifull and I want to see that for real one time...
It's realy sharp with lots of contrast. The only thing is that I've seen to many pictures of the northern light the last couple of weeks, so it tends to get a bit boring, still a nice shot, bumping to 7
