In the kitchen, I set up a little experimental area. Materials included aluminum foil, vegetable oil, alcohol based colored ink, 50mp camera, 100mm macro lens, and the Gisteq Flashmate II macro flash which I received as a gift from my daughter. Thanks Kiddo!

First I spent time understanding the properties of the ink on foil. The ink is a quick dry formula meant for toning metal. I'd start with one color, let it dry, and then add more colors. Each time I would create new colors due to the different combinations. Eventually, I would almost always end up with a near black color because of mixing so many colors. But I did create some very interesting and worthy images from that.

I then created little 3 inch wide tin foil cups with about a 1/4" high sides. This way I could fill with vegetable oil. I then added a base color, say blue. I'd let that settle out. During the process of settling, the oil and ink would first mix together and then all of a sudden they would begin to separate. This was the time I would release the shutter. This shot is about midway though the separation process. As I added each color, I would end up with wildly exotic colors and shapes. I chose this image for the challenge due to it's perceived depth. In reality it was completely flat.

The title actually came from my day in the kitchen. I was ready to give up several times. Just felt like a fruitless venture. But, I kept my mind open and evolved my methods during my learning process. I'll probably spend some more time doing this ink thing, I bet I can do a much better job with more time.

Congrats Dennis on the results of your kitchen session and the HM. Your efforts in the kitchen remind me of that old advertising line... "Better Photos Through Chemistry" (or something like that). Go Hit Squad.
