Going for something a bit original. I did some searches, and didn't see anything that did this well. I see blacksmith hammers, but that doesn't count. I see sparklers behind the nail, but that looks dumb.

For this, I broke apart a sparkler, put a small piece on the nail, lit it, and rested a hammer on the sparks. At first it tried hitting the sparks, but the timing was terrible.

I'm curious to see how this is received.

======

Wow, another honorable mention. Crazy. I hit such a dry spell, then seemed to find my stride a bit.

Thanks to voters and commenters.

FYI, in case you are curious what it looks like with the sparkler behind the nail, check this out. Looks much less cool than mine :) //nails.5wii.com/tag/sparkler

True, a nail does not spark like that. However, this is an excellent shot, and thank you so much for explaining how it was done. A very refreshing change from the all too common N/A in the photographer's comments.

Being a builder, when has a soft metal nail ever sparked from being hit with a hammer?

Unless you've hit a power line and its arc'ing through you haha

Then it would make a loud bang, nothing quite like cutting through high voltage cables with an excavator to give you the shock of your life when they go boom.

Interesting effect. I’m assuming a sparkler is located behind the nail. I like the checker plate background too.
