Street capture during Bethlehem Musikfest at a time when unrest over police shootings was beginning to escalate in the news. I saw the girl, newly wrapped in a cape she was just given by a street vender, walking down the street toward the cop. I snapped a couple shots and thought this was the most evocative since her face is completely obscured, allowing the viewer to imagine what thoughts might be on her mind as this new hero looks at the officer.

Thank you all for the wonderful comments, and to MeMex2 for her advice and the idea bouncing. I was pretty sure this was my image, but originally I had left the girl in color (her shoes have every shade in the rainbow) as I felt it made a statement about untarnished heroism and dreams of greatness when set against the portly cop, whose brethren were in the news daily at the time for the possible killing of innocent lives. Jane convinced me to try it this way and I liked the ambiguity of the message more and decided it was the better shot. When I checked this the morning voting started I thought I had made a horrible mistake as it sat at 4.4 after 10 votes and I'd never seen a 4.anything. I was just hoping it would make 5 before it was done, but never expected it to get this high. Two of my favorites in the challenge placed immediately above this, so I don't feel so bad.

As close to a classic of street photography as an image can be.
Sort of a Pippi Longstocking encounter.
This is a fraction of a second of stillness that might pass invisible in our perception had it not been captured and frozen in a felicitous moment; not too intense but inducing a mental processes. What could be the next succession of events? Something bad can happen or something really comical or the whole thing won’t lead anywhere and was just a fleeting juxtaposition of elements without any connection between themselves and without any consequence.
This is a “photograph of possibilities” in the same way as (the Italian director) Antonioni’s films were defined as “cinema of possibilities”
I am taken by the sauciness of the girl and I love the greyness of a newspaper image.

You captured that moment, innocence and attitude, naivety and experience, great photo.

A good title would have been the cape and the cop
