This did better than I expected. A great way to start back my membership after taking a break for almost a year. This was a really last minute decision and I took it and edited it in the last hours of light of the last day of the challenge.

Thanks for all your comments. I received a couple about the crop I chose. The main reason I didn't crop it closer was because of picture quality. I had to use a fairly high ISO to get my shutterspeed up. My 7D is very noisy anyway so I felt I cropped as close as I dared especially with the new larger dimensions. The second reason was that a crop of to the white on the top would have made it out of balance with the bottom and I would have had to crop it off the bottom as well, the overall crop in my opinion would have been too tight.

As far as a true candid... some people guessed right it was a little set up...She was all dressed up for church and so I took her outside to play with her dog. I snapped a few while she was playing. So even though she wasn't aware of me taking the shots...my intent was to take them while she was playing. Still a true candid in my opinion...I suppose that could be argued... but in my book a candid is a shot when you catch someone in a more natural pose usually not looking directly in the camera...even if it was in a studio. I have a wonderful candid of my middle daughter that I love... I was taking yearly shots of her in my studio and happened to catch her mid laugh when her sisters were teasing her. I love it... and in my opinion every bit as candid as one taken of someone sitting on a park bench across the park unaware.

Sorry this is sounding like a rant and it is not. I really appreciate different points of view on this subject. I just wanted to explain mine. I really valued all of the comments. Part of the reason I love DPC...lots of interesting discussion. Just so long as it doesn't go too far...

Yay! a red. Not a bad way to start back my membership. I also noticed I was the only colored shot out of the first 15 or so...just kind of an interesting observation. I wonder what the percentage of b&w versus color are on this one?

Lovely, happy photo. I feel like I want to crop it down to below the mountains.
Top 5.

Delightful capture of a carefree child and her puppy! This stop-action shot freezes ( no pun intended ) the happy energy of both. Quite a pleasing shot! Compositionally, I personally would have cropped down the top to the hard white horizon - but that would be, again, a personal preference.

A top five image IMHO. Great interaction suggested by the girl's eyes, smile, and slight angle to her dog as she runs. Good, clean diagonal line in the background to let my eye wander past them to the setting. Having a cute hat and a cute dog, doesn't hurt any either.

Cute and adorable, I get the feeling maybe a little too set up as we all know whose this is, and her lovely clothing implies this was not a random image. But I'm judging the quality of the photo which is flawless.
