Challenge: 30 Seconds or More III (Advanced Editing VII*)
Camera: Canon EOS-5D Mark III
Lens: Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM
Date: Dec 10, 2014
Aperture: 16.0
ISO: 50
Shutter: 30

My intent was to make a relatively clean image with a soft feel to it. I wanted leading lines to take one's eye from the foreground and toward the buildings in the background so I set the tripod up, looking down the beach, to let the water line be the guide. I also wanted some negative space so I waited until a large group of people were out of the frame in order for the water and sky to provide that space. I also liked the random pattern of rocks on the beach, although I struggled with color and tones. The original image has a dark beach with little in the way of interest.

Interesting to me is the fact that footprints from a young couple following behind the group can still be seen in the sand where the water has receded even thought the beach combers exited the scene through the right edge of the image. The couple was in the field of view when the shutter button was pressed, but moved fast enough for the slow shutter speed to ignore them, but not their footprints which were left behind. I liked the footprints, so I didn't bother to reshoot the scene. This is the only version of this image made that morning (although I made a few out take images in a different direction).

Used a 30 second exposure to soften and smooth out the waves. It was a pretty peaceful morning, so this was easily accomplished.

Processed heavily in Lightroom 5: Changed camera calibration to landscape, adjusted lens correction and leveled horizon. Used graduated filter and adjustment brush to lighten beach area and saturate sky and water, as well as adjusting most of the sliders available in the filter selections. After working with the selections with the graduated filter and adjustment brush, in basic panel, adjusted virtually every slider to affect the entire image. Made some HSL adjustments to get the colors I wanted and to eliminate some banding.

In NIK: Used Define 2 for noise reduction in sky.

In PScc 2014: Cloned a few of spots in the sky and unwanted white pebbles on the beach to keep one's eye from gravitating to them. Performed selective High Pass on buildings, but otherwise did not sharpen the image as I like the soft transitions in the water and thought the beach sand was sharp enough as is. Resized and saved to meet DPC requirements.

9. Absolutely beautiful pastel colors here, this is a wonderful shot. I bet this would print very nicely on some metallic pearl paper.
