Challenge: In the Style of Andreas Gursky (Advanced Editing VII)
Collection: Portfolio
Camera: Canon EOS-40D
Lens: Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM
Location: Hackettstown NJ
Date: Nov 23, 2014
Aperture: 10
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1250
Date Uploaded: Nov 23, 2014

I got a very straight shot for me, no rotating or cropping.
In PP, a lot of masking of different curves and brightness to create a sense of flatness with no focal point. What I personally find in Gursky is that the eye isn't pulled anywhere by the composition, which is against all the rules, even mine, so this intrigues me. Of the photos I took today, this feels most like Gursky.

Happy to give some feedback Don.
A Gursky image no doubt and yet theres more. Sticking to the comp rules here Def helps to keep the image together yet also as mentioned in your note.. the style lends itself to breaking the mold and with focal point lacking and scattering you all over the scene yet contained and ordered with strong lines repeated. Cleverly done. The rythm generated from bottom to top gets broken by a pulse in the line running across the scene - the nets. One dont realise how much effect this has when viewing it.

Exposure good and love the clouds and sky in this as well but with the birds confined to the ground. Im sure the Gursky effect would have been further enhanced if even the sky was scattered with birds.
It's Gursky..and yet you have thrown a different spin on it. Top contenders came in with copying textbook the style. Nice take on the challenge while generating an image which in your mind is Gursky.. yet stayed unique, different.

Works for me

Nice composition and the soft/warm light looks good. Manages to be simple and complex at the same time.

I didn't like this at first.

Then I did.

Now I really do. This is one of the best of the challenge IMO.

I particularly like the road/path, whatever that is in front of the pens, and the numerous colorful birds (with just the right amount of detail!) are awesome.

Really nails the whole Rhine II look, without being overly cliche. Well done. My only quibble is that I think I would have liked a little less sky for a more pano sort of look.
