It's hours before rollover and here i am re-shooting my entry. Change of subject. Was a red "Tommy's brand" coffee mug, not it's a pepper. My main flash's batteries died mid shooting, so that's it. Now i have hundreds of shots to choose from.
Hope you like the final result.
Camera settings:
- RAW+JPEG
- Color profile Vivid with sharpness, saturation and contrast boosted a bit. No RAW, so some in-camera color boost would suit this subject just fine.
- Daylight WB
- Manual mode, ISO400, f/10, 1/200 sec.
Lighting and setup
- One large red pepper on my dining table
- Black hoodie over the chairs in the back to create a black background
- Two small flashes. Main one up front, slightly to to the (camera) left, zoomed to the max (85mm). I triet using a gridded snoot at first, but the light was too harsh so i ended up diffusing it with an shoot through umbrella. Another one, bear, lighting the steam from behind and, again, slightly to the (camera) left.
- The steam was initially coming from a couple of wet cotton pads (the make-up removal kind) heated up in a microwave oven for one minute. It was kinda OK, but not strong enough for my liking. This version has cigarette smoke for steam. Originally, the smoke is blue and didn't fit the theme nor the subject, so i decided to gel the "smoke flash" red and ended up with red steam/smoke. The ashtray with the cigarette is behind the pepper. There is a hint of it at the bottom.
- Patience and lots of trial and error to get the right amount and quality of steam. I hope you like it.
Postprocessing
- Sharpen and resize. Minimal editing :-)
