Really great capture. Nice catchlight and detail. The background colors look like a studio backdrop. Would have scored well in Wildlife. (9)

Great bird portrait - and i'm not just saying that because I am a sucker for birds :-) I love the rich earth tones, and the background is great. Well done.

I like this little guy a lot and the blurred background really makes him stand out 9

What a nice bird. I wish the background gives more contrast, but I guess it would've been difficult too convince the bird to change location and stay still :)

remarkably sharp. beautiful depth and texture. would like to see a little more light on his face, esp around the eye (would have to be done post-processing i'd assume, since fill-flash and reflectors tend to irritate birds :). like the centred crop, and the white border works to balance the image out.
very nice.

Nice avian study. Love the color of the background, really accents the feathers.

This is a very simple subject that you shot absolutely perfectly. The colors are beautiful and consistent throughout and the detail that you managed to capture is incredible. Really great job.

Kookaburra sits in the old gum treeeeee.

Yup, I’m singing that stupid song now.

This is a great picture! The depth of field is spot on to soften out the distractions from the background. And any additional softening you have applied has also worked well to bring all attention to the subject. Very crisp detail and nice coloring. 8

Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree........... LOL! Sorry, couldn't help myself.

I love this shot, well done, the cropping, the centering the overall composition. Just seems a bit dull, just a touch overall. Maybe just a bit more contrast? A 9

I love these entries because they introduce the magnifent in natures designl very well captured with clossic dof. The texture is just grand and its subdued colors adds character. This will look beautiful in any wall. Bumping up to a well deserved 7

Cute little fellow. Nice details. Although it is very nicely blured, I find he's blending in with the BG a little too much. Damn that fall foliage! Still a great image.

very nice photo :) love the detail... take it your in aus :) hehehe :P that narrows you down to one of us ;) (yes am aus too) now back to your photo... love the focus and the blurred natural background , creates a nice mood i like how the tail also is blurred... giving the photo a sense of depth........ and now that ive run through some of my main likes... i can safely say that there aint that many dislikes at all ;) hehe actually truthfully speaking there is only one... and that has nothing to do with your photo
thats right you guessed it.... its the border... dont think its necessary here and if placed i cant say im a fan of the colour.... would like to see it not present but thats a personal opinion and no indication on your photo overall :)
but overall your photo is amazing and deffinitely deserves to be well placed !!! :)

Lovely shot, nice and clear. I would have liked the eye to be a lot clearer though... it seems a bit dark here. I love the texture of the feathers. Nicely exposed, effective blurred background. Shame the tail isn't in focus. 7

Nice composition.. lighting is a litttle dark, but the colors work. Not much dynamic or energy here in my eyes though, but definitely a subject that isn't captured often, around here. 7

curious the crop % of this.
nice and sharp - too much crop is bad though.

10/02/2004 03:40:36 PM
Intriging colours, especially in the background, which brings out the 'fall' mood out of the picture. Nice usage of shadows and highlights for the very dim colours of the picture. Its too bad for the blurry tail of the bird, which would've been more interesting "in-focus".

an excellent nature image. perfectly composed and very detailed. I particularly like how the bird's beak is slightly open.

I always wondered what a Kookaburra looked like, now through the magic of DPC, I know. Or at least take your word for it!! Super focus and composition. The feather hanging from the bottom is a bit of distraction. Background DOF is perfect. Really nice shot.

A very fine photograph of this unusual bird. The only flaw I can see is that the end of the beak seems just slightly out of focus. Excellent capture with his mouth slightly open.

All I can say is 'wow.' OK, I have more to say. You've brought this striking bird to life, with an almost human expression on its little face. Quite an image!

Great photo! I absolutely love the color palette. The tones in the background and blurred DOF technique really compliments the color and texture of the bird nicely, but without making it too boring monotone or too contrasty, if that makes sense. It just works. Love the personality from the bird too, though cloning that feather stuck his beak might be good... Going in my favorites. :) Great work! 10

...and that song will be in my head the rest of the day.

Very good wildlife study. Crisp details of the feathers and bird in general. Nice earth toned background to match the bird's colors. Border feels a bit too thick to me. 9

Great use of DOF and it looks like the focus is right on. Would work in a documentary or Audubon mag. By itself it doesn't hold my interest and I probably wouldn't choose it to hang, but with like pictures, yes. 7

Lovely colors. I also like the fact that you picked an uncommon bird to shoot (at least in the US, probably not where this was shot lol). The shot might have been a little more interesting if shot at an angle that would show more of the environment in which the bird is living though (if possible)

Cute little guy! Colors are great, seems autumnal (even though it's spring down there, isn't it?!) ... a slightly deeper DOF to include his tail would have made this perfect.

Terrific detail in the feathers adn the narrow DOF is excellent. The fine bokeh really helps to isolate this bird. I especially like the colors of the background. Very autumn-like colors. Exposure is outstanding and it doesn't appear that you had that much light to work with. 9

A lovely bird portrait with great focus, nice lighting - great catchlight in the eye and excellent composition - the position of the branch within the frame is superb. I like the blurred background a lot - the colours within it complement the bird but allow it to stand out from the background enough that we can appreciate it's form. 8

Perfect detail, light, color and presentation. The background you captured him with is the perfect complement to his own color.

Just nitpicking: DOF could have been a little greater to include the tail. Otherwise, textbook shot!
