Comment Challenge: Great image and setup. My only wish is that the postman's face be better lit.

Ha! You illustrated twice a non sequitur title but nothing, nothing of the crime novel perspires here.
It's a good snapshot of a postman ringing a bell once (or twice if we have to take your word).
In any case, I do not mark down a picture for not meeting a challenge but what would I do with this shot other than placing it in a book about, let's say, professions?

Obviously I get the title and the picture. Other than that connection, I don't really feel anything in this shot...seems very ordinary.

Probably hard to get the guy to do any acting for you, but the shot could have been done at a different angle...maybe from behind. Can't see his face, maybe some fill lighting. Maybe a dark feeling to the pic would have helped.

Gave it a 3

So... The novel has a postman nowhere in it, and it's just a non-sequitur.. How do I judge this?

Are you being cheeky, or did you simply choose a picture and find a title?...

How to know... Ambiguity is never my strong point - so I just have to go kinda middle of road on applicability.

As for photographic merit - it's not bad - keystoning bothers me some, and I think you could have pulled the highlights and shadows a bit.. But other than those small technical issues, I think you've captured quite a nice scene with real interest.

So, kinda upper-middle for the image itself..

3...for me this seems like a title pasted to a last minute candid.

Nice idea, and a shot you don't see that often anymore. There's a couple of things that bother me a bit about it, though. The slight angle of the shot -- I think I'd like it straightened or angled more. With just the small angle, it seems more like a mistake than a conscious effort, though I could definitely be wrong on that. Also, the postman seems underexposed and slightly soft. If you had no flash or reflector for fill, I'd rather have the background slightly overexposed to be able to have the exposure a little better on the subject. -4-

As far as meeting the challenge, well... you have a postman and he's ringing a doorbell, and this illustrates the title, so you have that nailed pretty tight I guess, although the title of the book, in the real world, is a complete non-sequitur. That is to say, nowhere in the book is there a postman, and nowhere does he ring twice, or ring at all for that matter :-)

The book's not ABOUT that, see? It's an early, and notorious, modern crime novel, having to do with a wife and a drifter conspiring to kill her husband. So there's a dilemma, huh? One that's troubling me in all this voting, truth be known. If you made an image faithful to the BOOK, the voters would say "WTF does this murder-in-the-bathtub have to do with a Postman?" and you'd get hammered. But you make an image that matches the title, people can understand that, but people like me who've read the book get a little peeved and...

You get the picture :-) I'm trying to rise above that...

As to the merits of the image, I'd be a lot happier if you'd coaxed some detail and structure out of the face. I like the light on his glasses though...

5 from me.

The first thought I had is that if I had taken this I would have allowed the background to be overexposed to bring the postman out of the shadows. But I have to admit the concept and execution makes me smile and so I can connect with the image. I particularly like his pink sweat bands and is that pepper spray for dogs attached to his bag? 6

It's ok. The background is a bit too bright and you loose details on the subject. The picture is too busy. And looks more as a snapshot. I love postmen. 4

Well, this is a literal representation of the title, but as you know it has nothing to do with the story. Technically, the composition is good but the light is a problem and difficult, admittedly, to fix. My suggestion in cases like this is to convert to black & white and work with the shadows to bring up more detail, say, in his face. I'm giving a 5.

Whilst this doesn't make me think of a film noir, I really like it, especially the contrast in light, and it's spot on for the title. A 6 from me

Looks like a snapshot.
The background looks exposed, but the subject looks too dark. The title fits... but it's just a photo, nothing spectacular to me. Gave it a 3

It is indeed, but has nothing to do with the title, poor exposure.5.

Well, what the title says is what you see ;) 5.

While not reflective of the story, I was a bit amused by the tie in to the title. Could use a little light on the postman though, as the background, especially the tree behind him draws my attention. 4

A somewhat snap-shotty photo that normally doesn't appeal to me, but for some reason this strikes a chord with me. Just a great shot of everyday life!

Not a very imaginative or interesting shot, but I do like the honesty of just seeing someone perform his job, and he seems like an interesting character. Also, the bright greens and blues are nice. 5
