I figured I should do something typically Jacko for the Masters challenge. The DOF is a bit shallow, but I like the overall color scheme.

Very nice colors. I am not a fan of this angle and focus, but that is just personal opinion.

I don't think I will get tired of the Dragonfly shots. I think this one would be better if more of the DF was in focus. Nice work and good luck. 7

Such a large depth of field to try and cover from a short range is difficults at best with just a flower let alone and Red Dragon thats not holding still for anyone! Tough shot & a good capture!

i can't vote, but i think this guy should win. the color and shape composition are incredible. DOF is good and everything that needs focus is crystal clear. the pose (it sounds strange to talke about insects posing) does a good job of pulling the eye through the picture. good work. keep it up!

Nice macro. When backround is so empty, I think the leaves could be more sharp, or the should be something in the background. On the other hand, it's probably difficult or near to impossible to get sharp image of such model :)

Great insect macro study. I think I would have liked to see more details of the dragonfly in sharp focus rather than shallow DOF. That works fine for the flower but not for the dragonfly, imo. Maybe you wanted to force the viewer to look at the head only. 7

Very nice saturated color and macro. Trying to decide if the halos around the green leaves are oversharpening, or just wind movement. Looks to be the latter. I'm not really fond of the angle of view, as I don't think it brings out the best in either the flower or the bug. 6

colours are awesome. could mebbe have dodged the highlights on his body a little under the wings to brighten him up. composition is nice...the square crop seems to go over well here.nice and shallow DOF is uber cool.

very nice balance of color and composure. Not sure if this has been edited in PS or not - but there seems to be a funny bluring going on that seems too strong for in camera (around mid stem at the top is more blurry than at bottom)?

IMO you need more depth of field, simply not enough is in focus. The extra bright spot on its eye is also distracting. 5

Great macro shot here!! If possible, a DOF to get the wings in detail may have been nice, but I know these wee things probably wouldn't have stayed still for that long!! 8

Too bad the wings and tail aren't in focus, but since I can't manage a shot like this I shouldn't really be talking! I love that there's nothing distracting here, it's just bug'n'flower, that's it. It's a nice shot, thanks!

Beautiful symmetry in this one with the flower and the fly- The colors are nice as well, very primary and soothing. The focal point is distracting because it is the wing and the wrong parts of the flower. This is nit-picking- Its a great shot.

Some of the elements that flow in and out of your DOF are a little distracting, but I have no idea how you could fix that. Colors are great.

Wow. Great composition, well timed capture. I normally don't mind limited dof in a macro, but here I would have liked much more, especially on the wings. The greens could have used a bit of PS work, not quite vibrant enough here for my taste. The focus is slightly out... the eyes should be tack sharp, instead only a portion of some wings is really sharp. Not an easy shot though. 7

Jacko? This is a decent little shot :-p Could use a bit more DOF though, maybe try closing down the aperture some :-))

Actually the centered composition and the overall brightness of the shot are 2 things I would have adjusted. It seems just over saturated or something. -danny

Really nice but it is almost as if there are too many things to look at that are splayed out. The petals, the wings, the body all seem to go from focus and back again. Great color and I love the background.

great pose with the dragonfly perfectly mirroring the profile of the flower. colors and strong and vibrant. depth of field is too shallow though for a shot pulled back this much an I don't like the hotspot on the fly's eye.

Very good use of colours. The Crop could've been a little tighter around the insect. I would've also wish for a clearer depth of view around the flower, seeing it as a whole.

Very well done colorful stop action shot of this dragon fly. Not an easy shot to get right and you have done it nicely.

i love this photo, love the focus and the way it changes through the varying depths and there really isnt much that i would change on this in general... if i was to be nitpicking i may look at cloning out the light reflecting off the eye of the dragonfly however thats being nitpicking and im not all too sure that that would actually improve the image.... aside from that the last green pettle on the left of the image seems to be doubled up... it has a ghosting image and you may want to consider sharpening that area up just a tad so focus is not drawn off the dragonfly but gr8 shot overall and gr8 work
congrats on a wonderful image

I think the DoF is slightly too shallow, but other than that this is a really good shot. The bright colours are great, and the composition, although centered, works really well in this case. 9

Depth of field and focus is working against you here...interesting photo just too out of focus for my tastes.

Love the DOF on this, really helps the eye focus on the dragonfly, and gives a great three-dimensional feel. It looks to me like you have some cloning artifacts underneath the flower though, and the focus of the insect isn't as clear as I've seen in similar shots.

Wonderful colors in this... clear sky blue contrasts well with the vivid red of the dragonfly, and the flower balances it off with the rest of the spectrum. The DOF on this seems too shallow... the tips of the foreground petals, the far wings and tail on the dragonfly, and the far leaves on the flower are a bit too blurry for my tastes. If this shot were from head-on, the shallow DOF would emphasize the insect's face, but as taken, this DOF choice fails to pull my attention to a specific subject.

I like it, but there's nothing in pure focus. There's the eyes of the Dragon Fly, and parts of the flower, but no one central point of focus, and it detracts from the beauty of this simple shot. Simple meaning simple beauty. Not in technique.
10/01/2004 12:25:19 PM
The colors are great, very vibrant combination, reminding me of late summer. I have some difficulty with the composition, I would have preferred to see some more empty space to the left, so the dragonfly moves out of the middle. Maybe that would also have given the opportunity to get a bit more depth of field.

Is it a motion blur? Or a shallow DOF. Frankly, I don't care because the effect is stunning. Good shot!

awesome shot, looks like the focus just missed a little (it's eyes aren't the sharpest part of the photo).

That´s a really cool shot!!
If only the DOF would be deeper and the tail of the fly would be sharper
Great colors..

This is a winning composition and the colors carry the strength of this image. I realize how difficult it is to make these captures. You did very well on the overall effort but the detail lost in the wings and the tails keep this image from rising to the very top. I realize the short dof available and so I believe that a movement of the camera to place it sideways and parallel to the lens would have at least salvage the tail end. Despite this, the image has great harmony with the spread of the petals and the dragon's fly posture. Placing at 6 as a place holder. I will return.
