I toyed with so many different ideas with this. I started with flowers in a box, then a whole lot of mail, then with a vegetable box full of young pea-plants - which all looked OK, but didn't really do much else.
My thirteen year old son (who is so keen to learn about photography that he's always around when anyone is holding a camera)was back-seat driving whilst I was trying to arrange and re-arrange the plants. Eventually, I put one of the boxes which were lying around on his head in an attempt to keep him quiet, and he looked at me so sadly that I aimed and shot. It looked better than the pea-shoots!! So we played around with different ideas, but I liked the thought of the box providing protection, at the same time being the only colour and cover in the child's life. This brought about removing the colour from the face which aligns his emotions and look far better to loneliness.
I shot the image indoors using a reading lamp to minimise the shadows on the face. There wasn't too much editing, besides cropping, partial colour removal and then changing the colour intensity of the cardboard box.
We both like the image and I particularly like the loneliness and sadness which he managed to bring across in the final result.

if you could have gotten some of the bottom of box to show behind/to right side of head, it would have had more impact.
