Collection: Portfolio
Camera: Nikon D80
Lens: Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED VR
Location: Fresno Yosemite Int'l Airport, California, USA
Date: Nov 9, 2012
Aperture: f14
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/125
Date Uploaded: Nov 9, 2012

Cloned out sensor dust, and an annoying tree top at the bottom of the frame. Applied saturation, vibrance, contrast, brightness, noise reduction, added the border, save-for-web.

I've had many negative comments about my border. Let me quote Frank Zappa: "If I like it, I publish it. If someone else likes it, that's a plus."

A truly fantastic capture. Interestingly, the border wasn't a distraction for me at all.
Congrats on the TT.

This is a Boeing 757 landing in the fog at Fresno International (KFAT). The fog was the weirdest I've ever seen. 1/3 of the runway was covered at the approach end, the rest at the time was clear. The photo depicts wake turbulence the Boeing 757 creates which can take down aircraft behind it.

As a result, the FAA increased the required in-trail separation behind a Boeing 757 by 1 more mile.

I took a sequence of photos that morning, and sent them out to "my list" of aviators I call "The FAT Community". Being an air traffic controller at KFAT, my location on the catwalk outside the tower cab makes for a great perspective and in this case, above the aircraft. A week later, I contacted a UPS pilot and forwarded the sequence to him, and it eventually reached the pilots who flew the aircraft that morning. Even the pilot in command mentioned that the fog was "some of the strangest fog I'd ever seen in 35 years of flying." The sequence of photos went viral within UPS! And I was informed that the last photo, this one in this competition, will be used for pilot training on the subject of Wake Turbulence.

To me this is a total victory. I'm honored to have my photos used to enhance safety for the flying public. And 7th place is nothing to scoff at. Thank You everyone for your comments and votes.

BTW, you can see all the pix of the mentioned sequence at:

Voted earlier coming back to comment.

Love the hazy clouds and overall warm golden hue of the photo. I love how the plane and the birds are together here. Nature and Man sharing the skies was one of the thoughts that struck me when I viewed this picture. The both seem to be traveling to the same destination in that they look to be going in the same direction. Wonderful capture of something that is seldom seen.

Great image, showing the turbulence at low attitude. Amazing you're on the same height as the airplane.

Amazing, eerie. The birds in the BG add a 'touch' to this I can't explain in words.
