 It might seem insignificant to some but to me it's been a life long dream to have an image chosen by and published at National Geographic. Read the story on my web site here and see the image on Nat Geo Explorers here.
Next stop; the magazine and hopefully a slightly more attractive model! :)

African Sacred Ibis (Threskiornis aethiopicus). Another in my "difficult to shoot" Wildlife Series. Backlit birds with predominantly black heads, neck, feathers are notoriously difficult to photograph and get detail. Spot metering is near impossible as it is such a small target. Generally you have to overexpose by at least 1.0 EV. Naturally you blow the BG. In this case I positioned myself to have the dam water as part of the BG and it blows white. The detail I managed to capture with this classic 1997 Sigma 170-500mm APO f/5-6.3 Film Lens still amazes me and other wildlife togs using $9000 600mm f/4 lenses :)

The detail is superb and the white background perfect to isolate the bird.
