I wanted Elvis Costello's "The Poisoned Rose" but as that's also the first line I thought it just didn't suit as a title :) so I settled on this instead:
Elvis Costello - Song with Rose

Between last breaths and first regrets
The days dragged on like cigarettes
In the distance martyrs and martinets
Dally, dancing with the empty silhouettes of threats

So, where but heaven does love end
And where on earth does it begin
It's not the kind of love that is pinned
Like a medal
Or presses pennies in a tin

There is hope, and after that, there is only faith
Love like a wraith
Never made me afraid
Consoled as I was by that shade...

Here lie the roses in the ashes
Deep as the barnacles that cling
Just like a lace that runs through everyone and everything

In that other still forever
In that time before the past
I told myself we'd be together
Can you promise me that it will be eternally?

There is hope, and after that, there is only faith
Love like a wraith
Never made me afraid
Consoled as I was
Consoled as I was
Consoled as I was by that shade...

IMG_0454 - this will be interesting, again. I'm totally unsure what people will be looking for because I have no clear idea about what the challenge title vs the challenge description was asking. I went with High Key, Soft Focus (I think!) and minimal (if any) 'blur'. Oh well, bring it on :)

Just a note - this effect was achieved in camera. Afternoon light in my garden, a piece of white paper torn so when it was wrapped around the stem the rose 'stuck out of it', a piece of cling film held between the lens and the flower with left hand, manual focus, half crouch down like a nong, camera in right hand, sway back and forth, click when it looked good. Oh, I forgot this part: feel like an absolute twit when son's friend visits and her Dad pulls into my driveway, takes one look, drives away, only to come back in 5 minutes and tentatively ask if he's in the right place! :0 Welcome to my world, buddy! :) My kids have to put up with this weird stuff all the time :)

#2, tied with another
So many images missed in this challenge, that this was an easy second. The subtlety of the rose in the middle can be lost if you don't look for an extended period of time. If you could have pulled slightly more contrast in that region, this image would have been much better; not much more contrast, just a little.

Nice, simple and clean. It doesn't grab me personally as much as some of the others, but your technicals are strong. 7
