When the power of love overcomes the love of power the world will know peace.

I found this quote while browsing online. I thought of this shot as soon as a read it.
I can't think of a better way to express this quote, but with a child.

I painted my daughters bedroom wall and my daughter painted the word peace. We are redecorating her room so painting it like this was no big deal.

Desaturated all color except purple and lightened it up a bit. Cloned a few spots out of the floor.

Will it do well? Not sure.

Powerful image, this is a ribbon photo imo. I think it could even be more powerful with more dramatic lighting conditions with harder light more from the side and some use of burning in PS, like that it would convey the message better I think. Otherwise, an outstanding photo in this challenge, nice work.

visually this image is outstanding. the concept feels a bit trite. i think it would work better if it were just "peace" without the "L." i really appreciate teh creativity and technical quality, however. keep it up!

What a wonderful model. Brilliant idea, and great execution. I would've pose the model differently, so she doesn't look like standing on one leg, but it's just such a detail. If I could vote, it would've been one of my favourites.

I hope this wins the blue just based on it's message and composition alone. It says so much and says it so well. I wish I could give this a 100, but you'll have to settle for a 10.

This is great. I didn't catch the L on my first pass which is disturbing to me but that's why I go around a couple of times. The pose is excellent and the color and even the border which I usually loathe is great. Excellent composition and technically flawless as far as I can see. 10.

10/04/2004 03:43:18 PM
This is more a political statement than a human aspiration. It opens up a can of worms. If it is an aspiration then the element of evil enters which is the antithesis of peace. This is a sad fact of life and the flux of these good and bad concepts will forever carry on until one vanquishes the other.

The image then has the effect of humoring the innocent or the innocent relaying to the wise that war is bad. This message is appreciated by out better sentiments and by men of good will...but the world is filled with vaders who hate peace and human contentment.

The concept is great while the execution leaves a little to be desired becauses it rises the image to more of a poster than a photograpgic study. Bumping up to 6.

The underlying message of this entry is excellent. Also a good idea to use a younger model as a form of inspiration for all people young and old. The desat is also nice but I feel contrast is somewhat flat. The position of her feet looks awkward and uncomfortable but then again kids work in weird positions. 7

Strong points: The emotions evoked by the image - both empathy and humor - are powerful. The technical stuff is all perfect including composition, exposure and the desat. The purple really works as the conterpoint. Suggestions for improvement: for me the border is a bit larger than it needs to be.

Not a fan of selective desat - but as I say it does work with certain situations and this is one of them - well chosen.

What a fun shot this must have been to shoot. I love the use of desautration in this shot and the focus is well done also. The soft focus is show in some spots and the clarity in others. The ony thing that really gets to me is her feet. I don't know what it is, it's not the placing of them, my kids stand like that all the time, but they look almost undefined, no toes or something, can't tell if she's wearing stockings or they were just blurred out, but it really takes away for me. A 9

This is another shot that popped out at me. It's clever and surprising, unique and emotional... and she is adorable! I love her outfit, love the handprint! My only qualm is that it's a touch crooked (so minor, I know, but i'm reaching here ahah)...All in all, it's an excellent shot, love the selective coloring, really dig the texture of the wall with it's paintbrush markings...and SHE is just too cute. Thanks!

Well balanced photo with great color contrast to the desaturated girl. Lovely tones in the B&W too, perfect pose, and a good message. I am not sure, however, what the second message is besides peace. What's the L for? Excellent work. 10.

Lighting - I think the lighting is very subtle and helps with the mood of the image
Composition - good placement of the girl and the message on the wall with the girl looking into the image
Exposure - seems right for the mood
The focus seems a bit soft . I think this image could benefit from having everything sharp. 9

Perfect photo! This is one that stands out and the work you have put into it has paid off more than well, all I can say is WOW!. Wonderful lighting, composition and post processing. The girl's stance is very natural, amazing, I would give it an 11 if I could, but I can't so a 10 will have to suffice! It has a kind of Sonifo feel to it :)

You should make a poster out of it and post it all around the city you live. Maybe you can start a worldwide movement with it and influence what is happening. The image has all the power to do so, such a young innocent girl in casual clothes, just enjoying the painting, creating such a powerfull message with the play of words. The desaturation is perfect here, it works really well.

Very creative! This shot is technically great, and it's great to see selective desat used with style and skill. I bet you'd do well with this on DPC Prints. There's a great feel of balance to this shot.

10/01/2004 02:30:17 PM
cute idea well executed technically - I would have preferred to see more of the girl's face, and to have her hips/legs in a more natural position - and the paint can looks adult-prepared

This is a charming image and beautifully presented. I think the idea of combining peace and please is a very clever way to communicate that the child is asking "can't we please have peace?". The composition works well with the child, paintpot and text positioned very well within the frame. This is also one of the few examples of selective desaturation that I have seen lately that really adds something to the impact of the finished image. 9

minus the selective desat, this is my favourite composition so far. I'd have givin it a higher vote if it were either all colour or duotoned.
everything else about it is perfect. my top vote so far.

Excellent work. Very creative shot. I love the muted colours as well as the theme. The message being delivered by a child only makes it more effective.
She has a wonderful stance by the way, creates a natural feel to it and adds a childs "playfullness" to this picture.

Some how there is such a good feeling in this shot. Looks so simple but is so great.

beautifully toned. great pose and a simple and sweet message. I love many of the small details - the paint on her arm, her bandana, the wall textures, the painted handprints. I give it a 10 even though I find her feet posed awkwardly.

This is technical and emotive, the color the compositiona dn the message are all done quite well. Something about the overall feel is lacking for me. The letters are not easy for the eye to look at; the y make me feel uncomfortable and push my eye down to the girls feet. Its still damn good though! Is it too late to just draw a peace sign?

Absolutely sensational. Great use of selective desat, and great choice of the tone of colour left. Has to be in running for a ribbon, in some amazingly stiff competition. Just perfect. (10+)

I love this photo, it just seems like there should be more of a mess with the paint

Lovely photo. One of the best selective desaturation examples I've seen on this site. Excellent composition too. One of my favourites for what it's worth - there are so many good pictures in this bunch.

I *LOVE* this photograph, it's message, and it's feel. An instant classic, IMHO.

Wonderful and one of my favorties of the challenge. Composition is dead on. I love the message and the way the little girls legs are set up. The DeSat is great for this shot as well. Even the purple handprint on the pants shows your great attention to detail. Congratulations on a fantastic photo!
