I remember a couple of Adams photographs involving elaborate tree roots, and there's a wonderful park at Point Fermin in San Pedro that has some amazing trees. So I figured since I didn't have wonderful mountainous landscapes, I'd go with roots.

Three shot HDR, converted to B&W with Nik Silver Efex. Probably did either Topaz or Nik Color Efex prior to B&W conversion, too.

I did intentionally compose to capture the lighthouse in this framing. It wasn't possible to the get the light without it, for one thing. And, as always, I try to put too much into one photo. I'd say I'd learn to do better, but that's probably not true. :-) Very much appreciate all the comments - thank you!

I didn't comment during the challenge, but I love this take for a Modern Day Ansel Adams.... great light, great details... awesome subject.

So it made it back to tiny violin land. No 1,2 or 3 votes. That's always satisfying

This is not my idea of an Ansel Adams subject or composition (I am no expert and may be wrong), yet it is an image that I suspect he would have liked a lot. The light - late afternoon, maybe? - on the roots, trunk and branches of this very interesting tree is beautiful, and I am quite taken by the way you used that to frame the lighthouse and out-building. The tonal range might have been just a bit stronger but there's such nice detail even in the shadows. One of my top 10.

would have been improved with no inclusion of the background buildings.

Very cool root system. Too bad for the buildings in the background, they steal a lot of attention.

Love the tree roots and how you framed that house in the background well done.

Excellent tree root study. Well exposed with great detail in the shadows. The sky beyond is lost (blown out). Not sure about including the structures in this scene. While the DOF plane is deep, I'm not sure what you want us to see. The house and buildings behind draw my eye away from the nature scene.
