I personally think this is the best shot I've taken - maybe ever. Maybe a bit of a shoehorn, oh well. Figured I'd play on the fact that a stream is literally saturated with water. The desaturated shot from the camera came out awesome in my opinion... so hopefully people will see that.

You can actually barely see my camp setup in the distance. The only evidence in this shot is the shovel standing up straight, and a very slight smoke cloud that brings out the tree in the distance.

Resized and sharpened only.

While I find voting results a fun measure of skill and helps develop the craft but is very unscientific and the bottom line is that you like the shot. I have found comments more helpfull than voting. With comments you hear exactly what the commenter is thinking and frankly you can disreguard it if it's lame. The positive comments will reinforce your vision and criticisem that you learn from will make you a better photographer.

In other words - who cares

I like the photograph probably would have given it a 6, I love black & white, some voters hate it.

WELL I WAS ONE OF THE HIGHER VOTES AND GAVE IT AN 8 FOR MIMINAL I LIKE IT A LOT BUT THEN I ENJOY THE PHOTOS HERE AND TRY TO SCORE THE WAY I FEEL WHEN I VIEW THE IMAGE THEREFORE YOU GOT AN 8 FROM ME SO DO NOT BE DISPONDENT AS LONG AS YOU WERE HAPPY WITH IT IS WHAT MATTERS XOX
TRY IT IN A DUOTONE IN BLUE GREYS AND SEE IT IT HAS MORE DEPTH JUST A THOUGHT

I gave it a 7, i thought it very nicely shot, especially for a minimal challenge.

I gave it a 7 too. Really liked the whole effect.

Personally I might have given it a dreamy sepia/quad tone look.

Getting a 6 is sometimes an achievement that Ansel Adams would have had a problem with ;-)

It's lovely! Have you printed it for yourself? You have another stream shot in color in your portfolio that is also good. May be a stronger composition and you may want to try it in mono though it is quite nice as is.

Scoring on DPC continues to baffle me most of the time and I've been here for forever.

The thrill of getting that perfect picture is the addiction of photography. The thrill of looking at a perfect picture belongs to the art afficionado. If you didn't get the appreciation you hoped for, & if that appreciation is important to you, then you have to think about your work in terms of the people who look at it. What excites them will probably not be the same things that excite you. So, my suggestion is to study up on the mechanics of sight, the way human vision works, the psychology of color & also the psychology of looking.

For me, the first instant I look at this, I recognize it. I have a problem staying interested in it long enough to vote on it. Looking at a documentary shot of Nature is a poor substitute for being there. Your memories of camping in that spot are stronger than any picture you could take of it. Try for a picture that has the impact of being there, that creates its own memory.

Usually, after I write stuff like this, I chicken out of hitting the Post button.

Be happy with your personal achievement. The exposure is excellent for a difficult lighting situation, and the slow shutter speed did a great job of smoothing the water. The contrast is even very good for a minimal editing image. Keep in mind that you got a lot of 6s on this, which would indicate a technically good shot. However, for the viewer, there is nothing compelling to single this out from many other woodland/stream landscapes. To get a lot of votes over 6, you need something that grabs the viewers interest or emotion -- sun rays streaming through mist, a little fawn drinking from the stream, lovers picnicking beside the stream, a child crossing the stream on the slippery rocks, etc.

If I had taken this shot as well as you did, I would be very proud of my accomplishment.
