How'd They Do That? :: Absolut Inebriation.
Absolut Inebriation. by GordonThe shotDecided to do this after having some drinks the night the challenge was set, so wanted to recreate an Absolut Vodka advert. I'd also done some other more sporty shots, that could be used for something like a Nike advert but I wanted to try something different. I was originally going to do an 'Absolut Copy' type shot with just a bottle and some lemons. After trying this I wanted to try something more related to the challenge site and overall theme, using a screen shot of the site instead of setting everything up in front of a monitor. I printed out a screenshot of the web page and tried to incorporate that with the bottle and started playing with the reflection through glass. I'd been using the glass in the first place to get the shiny surface for the lemon shots. When I started to see the trial reflection shots I wanted to do something to imply drunkenness and needed another version of the web site, this time flipped so that the mirror image would look like the real thing.
One thing that is really apparent from trying these types of product shots is how much effort you have to put in to cleaning things like glass or fruit or anything to stop stray reflections ruining the shot.
Also I started to really notice the huge impact different lighting can make to a shot. These samples try to show this. These are all taken with exactly the same setup. Only the light is changed between each shot and it has a huge impact on the amount of reflection that occured. I held the flash at different angles or with different bounce and reflector cards (plain white matt board). Post processing
Not many adjustments, as all the challenge was in getting the right lighting in the first place. A bit of cropping to get the bottle framed well, some curves/ levels to brighten and stretch the contrast and then resampled/ sharpened for the final result.
