How'd They Do That? :: Banned!
Banned! by levyj413This took more doing than most of my setup shots, so I was thrilled at how it came out. First, I made up this sheet of circles and printed about 6 copies: Then my daughter and I cut them out and taped them to the background, which is a piece of black fabric I bought for maybe $15. One of the best photographic investments I've made! She sat in the chair for me so I could get the focus right, then hit the shutter for me while I bent my head down. The result was okay, but not that fascinating: Then I thought of all the picture-in-picture shots I've enjoyed. So I used that shot to make what you see in the entry as multiple copies spinning into infinity. I actually looked up the font of the Washington Post for the headline so it would look right, then spent some time warping it so it followed the newspaper's bend. Finally, I printed that, plus the headline you see in the entry and glued them to the newspaper. My daughter had gone to bed by this point, so I used the timer. Lit with onboard flash. Luckily, the shadows weren't too bad. I only took a few shots, and the first one was the best. Editing was primarily blending the too-white headline and photo into the gray newspaper. Other than that, a bit of sharpening and darkening the blacks to pure black, and I was done. In this unedited closeup of the newspaper, you can see how the white paper really stood out: Total time from starting to design the circles to entering: about 6 hours. And, naturally, I ran out of time at the end and forgot to clone out the finger on the left! Here's the final product:
