How come I do not have HDR Toning in my Photoshop CS4? Should it not be in the pull down menu "images" and then in the pull down menu "adjustment" and then under where it says "shadows/highlights".? In my copy of CS4 it has the feature "variations" in stead of "hdr toning".................. I wonder why?????

You mean in the File menu, under Automate, Merge to HDR

It is suppposed to have a HDR toning function in the Image pull down menu somewhere

I have it in my CS5 Beta, under Image->Adjustments->HDR Toning... But NOT in CS4. Have Merge to HDR, but I don't ever remember seeing HDR Toning in CS4; but then again, I don't use it much at all, so may not have been looking. To the best of my knowledge though, it is a new feature in CS5.

I agree, I never saw a toning function in PS.

That's not in CS4, but it is in the upcoming CS5 release.

When you merge images to HDR in Photoshop CS4 it will be a 32 bit file. You will be asked to adjust your White Point before CS4 opens the result into the main window. Down on the bottom left near the status bar you will have an exposure slider or you can select the view menu and select 32 bit options, but there is very little there that would be considered toning options.

When you convert it to 16 bit, you will get a curves window under local adaptation where you can adjust certain aspects of how the file looks, but nothing on the order of the detail controls or tone compression controls that a program like Photomatix Pro are included in control menu form in CS4.

Perhaps you saw the feature in a CS5 Preview video or something and assumed that they were also in CS4...not realizing they are a new feature? Not sure, but that menu has never existed in CS4. I wish it did, but wish in one hand......**** in the other.

I'm a member of NAPP, and Adobe invited some NAPP members to participate in the beta testing.

You have to convert to 16 or 8bit, after your merge. Image>Mode>8 or 16bit
