For the past couple of weeks I've been having problems with my 4 year old Olympus E-500, where every so often photos are desperately over-exposed, some looking just like negatives. The problem isn't constant, but I can't seem to figure out what might be causing it. It started just in Aperture Priority mode (the mode I use the most) and originally, if I swopped over to Auto the shots would be fine. This weekend though, even in Auto mode some of my pictures were like this - about 10-20%. Once the problem has started it doesn't matter how much I stop down the exposure, it continues to occur until I either change modes (which now doesn't always solve the problem) or switch the camera off and back on again. Even that hasn't always improved matters.

I'm wondering if my sensor is giving up the ghost, or if the camera simply needs a service. As this is my first digital SLR I've no experience to go on so would welcome thoughts from the great pool of experience here on DPC.

Many thanks.

Is it always with the same lens? Perhaps your aperture isn't actually functioning as it should?
ETA: this could be just in one lens (aperture blades are sticking) or possibly the body wouldn't be doing it consistently.

try checking your metering setting. if its on "spot" the sensor may be picking up a dark area of your image and trying to compensate. unless i need spot for picking out a particular subject to meter on, i just keep it on the first setting which gives you more of an average which is kinda better for scenes where you want an overall good exposure.

Thanks spiritualspatula and briantammy for your thoughts. It's definitely not on spot - that was the first thing I thought of and I've tried all metering options and it makes no difference.

Will try with another lens after work today and see what happens.

Again thanks for taking the trouble to give your thoughts.
