Do any of you guys get a lot of weird looks from people when taking pictures? The other day I was at a grocery store taking pictures of vegetables and flowers when I notices people looking at me weird. It happens to me a lot when I'm out taking pictures, it makes me feel uneasy and I can't concentrate. How do you deal with that?

I remain totally unfazed... mind you, having spent 30 years in a police force, I was quite accustomed to strange looks and when taking photos, I don't get the rather picturesque language I was so accustomed to. :O)

Yep, happens all the time, usually the way I think of it is, when you look at someone else taking a picture with a passing curiosity, that's pretty much the same way people are looking at you. When I think of it like that it makes me realise they don't really care at all and it's just me being paranoid :)

Haha, I've never seen anyone taking photos in a grocery store, that might have something to do with it. :-)

I've thought of it, then thought better of it. :)

You can always wear headphones. I find that really removes me from any environment I'm in if you're concerned about it bugging you.

I get the weirdest looks when I'm choosing fruit or veggies to photograph. This one lady actually got pissed off that I was being very picky and commented that they all should relatively taste the same so why bother picking a good looking one. I completely ignored her and kept looking for the perfect specimen as she tried to show me how to choose fruit by taking any one and stuffing it in her bag in an impulsive frantic way. lol

I got initially weird glances when I went to the florist looking for interesting flowers (and asking just that) and perusing those on display. Once I explained the type of thing I was looking for and for what, she understood entirely and got a chuckle out of it. I also got my flowers for free because I didn't care if the whole stem was immaculate, more just the flower itself. :)

People used to stop and ask if my work truck was broke down. Most of the ones that know me now know that if it's on the side of the road, I am shooting nearby. I tell them that if the hood is up, I am probably shooting pix of the motor. It's great to live in the sticks where everybody knows each other.

Helps if you don't look weird...

I tend to get strange looks no matter what.

Im used to it by now. I always get stopped and asked why i am doing what I am doing out of curiousity. Its a nice bit of conversation.

When I shoot with the models, I get tons of attention. And tons of people always staring :)

You think those are weird looks....you should see some of the weird looks I get when people see me taking photos through our neighbors bedroom window. (yes, Just a Joke!)

Last spring I pointed my camera out the car window and shot a flowering tree as I drove by, trying to get some nice movement trails. A car pulled out of the driveway behind me after I passed. She followed me 5 blocks until I got back to work, then pulled up beside me with a huge paranoid look on her face. "Why were you taking pictures of my house?" I wanted to just tell her to get a grip, but instead just explained and she calmed down. But really, lady...get a grip! It was 2 seconds, out the window, at 20 mph. What do you really think I was trying to do?

lol Same here, I hold them up and move them around to see if shadows will make the dents and bruises more pronounced so I can toss it and choose another. I'm bloody sure some people think I'm trying to see through them or something.

Couple of weeks ago I was in town and wanted to take a couple pics of this area that is being demolished, well i felt a bit uneasy doing it (people might think I'm a terrorist tor something!) until I spotted a woman intently snapping away at a pile of rubble. That made me feel less weird! lol I thought she might've been a DPCer, y'know being a freak 'n all :)

For the 47 steps challenge, I cut out and placed 47 paper footprints outside my apartment. Then lit them with a big spot light. You should have seen the looks I got! Most people walking by, just had to ask what I was doing. But once an explanation was given, it made sense to them.
I think the word was "Neat"...

During the tulip festival I was out shooting the flora. Camera was tripoded very low. Shooting up at the tulips. I then held a large Canada flag above the flowers, to produce a background. Man, the amount of people at this event is huge! I think I saw half of them pointing me out.
Many people were very curious and a few asked to see the results.

Regarding shooting in the grocery store:

The big chain stores won't even LET you do it. They have issues with industrial espionage. Apparently all the stores spy on each other all the time. Really competitive market, really tiny profit margins. I asked "my" manager, who knows me well, for permission to photograph his produce and fruits, and he had to kick it upstairs to chain management. Even with him vouching for me, the answer came back "No."

I'm not quite sure if you're replying regarding my post but I don't shoot the fruit in the store. I wouldn't even think of doing that because I know what the response would be, negative. I understand why though. I'll be given access to a warehouse full of fruit and veggies in the near future but only if I get top management to agree. Lower management is all for it but, they're lower management and we all know they can't make those decisions.

Getting back to topic.

I got very odd replies and looks when I was shooting with my pinhole adaptor ( a bodycap ) on my E3. People would stop and ask what I was photographing and I would reply that I was just practising because I didn't have a lens yet.
