Just wanted to point this out specially for the sake of those 19 people who voted a 1 on my image and who were probably under the impression that my entry was in the wrong challenge as you could not see a shoe. Well do have a close look again at the way I arranged the flowers and the stems. It forms the shape of a high heel shoe/pump.

Regards
Fred

I thought it was great! Sometimes I wonder about photographers that "can't see". LOL!

The average score is a measure of broad appeal. There are many successful entries that miss the broad appeal factor but succeed with a more narrow group. This is one of them. Sometimes you go in knowing an entry will have a narrow focus.

Added: There is sometimes a fine line between a creative interpretation of the subject and a shoehorned entry.

Nor was the blue ribbon if your interpreting things that exactly ;)

I saw the 'shoe' in the flowers ... but it wasn't a very well done image, IMHO ... the lighting is very harsh and flat, it's not very sharp and the border isn't appealing ...

True...but it was something that you can wear on your feet, shoes, boots, slippers I can handle - flowers made to look like a shoe is stretching things a little too much for me.

Funny talking about shoehorns in a shoe challenge...ironically no actual shoe horns in the shoe challenge.

Anyways, in my opinion I didn't feel it was a shoehorn. I felt it was a creative way of representing a shoe. Of course that's my opinion but really? To give it 1?

When I encounter an image I feel does not meet the challenge I give it another look to at least try to see the connection to the challenge. If people would have done that in this case it wouldn't take long to figure out the connection.

Sorry, I guess I failed to live up to expectations this time.

It's a fine, creative interpretation of the topic, IMO. Nice colors.
I will say that I had to look at this one for more than a moment to figure out the purpose but I did and I like it.
If I remember right, you also got a request for validation. Any idea where that came from or why?

I liked it and gave you a seven.
03/02/2010 12:46:10 PM · #15
Well I liked it! I gave you an 8! It's different & I think creative!

i wouldn't expect less than 19 ones on this sort of entry - no shame, it just goes with the territory. only nit is perhaps might have kept the original pun on chou-fleur as the title.

I think everyone who really take some time to see what they are voting on could find out that this flower was representing a shoe. I don't think it's the best shot of the challenge, but i think some people should spend more time looking at the image before voting. I gave you a 7, like my comment says.

I gave it a 9, and faved it 'cause the title made me curious, so I looked it up.

This was a very creative and interesting take on the challenge and I learned something as well.

Why?! You can instantly tell it's not a shoe, or boot, or slipper, or ANY kind of real footwear even. No need to slow down considering the challenge theme. Now in a Free Study slowing down for this image would certainly be appropriate.

I will take your opinion too, but don't you think it's wrong to give a 1 just because you didn't see the shoe instantly?

I agree, but it took me several viewings and much puzzlement before I saw "the shoe", and even then I felt it was a bit of a stretch -- not the concept, but the execution. It's possible I didn't even see the shoe until I looked at the thumbnail awhile -- and that is not the way I typically vote.

I loved that entry from the first time I saw it but almost commented that it was DNMC - till I googled the title at that point I could CLEARLY see the shoe. If I had been voting in this challenge I would have given it a 7; maybe an 8.
I thought it was a wonderful interputation of the challenge.

Aside from the "artsy" or whatever interpretation this entry is supposed to have for the challenge, it's just not that great. The photographer himself says it was last-minute. It shows, in my opinion.

You don't have to look at something for an hour before you realize it's simply technically inferior. Less time to determine it just doesn't meet the challenge, shoe-shape or no.
03/02/2010 03:35:26 PM · #24
Well, to each his own. I think it's a great picture. I don't see any major technical flaws in it. But, I also think - regardless of the shape he put the flowers in - it didn't meet the challenge. There were a few pictures like that in this challenge for me - I loved the pictures but not in this challenge. But, I also got *itched out in one of the comments on my entry telling me that the challenge wasn't about laces.

Interesting and valid observations all. I agree that it actually does not fit the challenge in the true sense of the theme as it's not a shoe per se. Technically it also leaves quit a lot to be desired.
