so i just bought a used lens that is still in fairly good condition, there were some specks of dust inside the front element. it never showed up in any of the photos i took, but tonight i took some long exposures and there was specks EVERYWHERE and i was just wondering if that would be the specks in the front element or dust on the sensor. |

Take the same duration exposure with one of your other lenses (using a narrow aperture). If the specks are in the same location then it is dust/dirt on your sensor. |

FWIW, dust specks that show up on photos are almost never in the lens, they are nearly always on the sensor.
Check you sensor by taking a photo of a completely blank white wall (or sky) at f/22. You'll be surprised how much crap shows up!
