One great thing about photosight.ru is that it's got a script that allows you to change the tone of the background for photo-viewing, to any of a number of tones across the spectrum from black to white. Including this script recognizes the fact that different photos look good against different backgrounds.

Has any consideration been given to the inclusion of a similar script here?

Yes lots of talk but nothing is being suggested by the site owners. To get things done here you need to ... ah forget it.

Our photos would benefit from a darker background but I will not hold my breath until it happens. ;)

I think the best method is to actually use a sharpie to write it on a $100 bill and then mail your suggestion to langdon...
