Looking for some new ideas for fots of the newest member of the family.
Little frankie 17 weeks old when these taken and growing so fast!

She is still too small to be able to sit or support much of her own weight, but want
to try and get some more nice fots while she is tiny, but am stuck for ideas.

Looking forward to seeing what you lovely people can come up with!

Took this at 16 weeks old. Very simple set-up. In the bathtub leaning on mom (that's her skin you see as the background). 580EX flash in the ceiling. 50mm 1.8 el-cheapo lens.

My granddaughter is still younger than that and I have the same problem with figuring out ways to prop her up. I've found the swing to be the most promising as it's a sitting position (just leave the tray down and have someone stay close). And then there are always props you can add to the picture (like feathers!), LOL!

here is one I did of a friends little girl. I got the fairy wings at the dollar store.along with 3 different colored skirts. she was 4 months old here. That place is good for finding props sometimes. search for babies in flicker your sure to get some ideas from there. this is a link to flickr.com/photos/ssmythphotography/4251628443/in/set-72157623030712975/

I find that searching google images for Infant Photography yields good inspiration.

Wow some nice images there guys!

Kelli i love the feathers idea, will need mum on hand for that one for sure to stop her eating them, she is trying to consume everything she can get her hands on at the moment lol.

Gonna have a proper scan on the web as suggested when i get a second.

Tried a cool idea for baby feet shots last week, but she proved too wriggly. We were gonna wait till she was sleeping and have another go but not found the time yet.

Thanks for the pointers guys will let you know how i get on

If she has any unusual facial or bodily features you can use them to your advantage...

Or wait until she's asleep and let the woodland creatures babysit for a while...

Lens wise a lensbaby is good for something different...

And don't forget to photograph the tantrums...

I love children photography and I read a few books which were actually useful, particularly if you think of occasionally taking photos of friends and their kids (which personally I find very exciting).
I fished out from amazon a review I wrote long time ago and I pasted below, if it can help.
The books are:
STUDIO PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY OF CHILDREN AND BABIES (Classical portraits)
"The art of children's photography" (more contemporary portrait)
Photographing Children: Develop Your Digital Photography Talent

Despite the title, the last one has no much in terms of lighting and digital processing, but some more personal images than the other two and a much more old style look to the images (the author used to work analog for many years). Also, it focuses more on natural light than the other two.
The first one is definetely very good, but perhaps very oriented to commercial photography, so it shows things that work with paying customers, but maybe you might not find too creative given it's your boy you wish to photograph. They all have tips and tricks on how to deal with children so to make them at ease while you phtoograph and get the right expression. But again, that's less of a problem when you are the parent rather than a professional under pressure for getting good shots of children never seen before and in a half an hour slot :)

Have a great time, photographing children and particularly my boy is what I enjoy most!

STUDIO PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY OF CHILDREN AND BABIES 3ED (Paperback)
I read this all in one go and loved it. However, it requires a few extra reading on-demand to be beneficial.
The author is a professional with a very succesfull studio.
Photographs are excellent, but on the classic side, not necessarily contemporary photography. It's written in the perspective of running a photography business, so it also covers marketing and other useful things.
It's very much about classic poses in the studio, or about how to elicit them (children are not too inclined posing)
The highlights for me were:
Dealing with children and parents, with useful tricks: it differentiate between ages and suggests different approaches
How to organize the studio so to minimize unexpected problems
How to manage expectations from parents and preparing them
How to discuss the shots and select the winners
Lighting: 2-3 flashes and well described. However, there are no diagrams which would make things more easy to people with no experience (that's why 4 stars rather than 5). Covers buttefly lighting, loophole lighting, rembrandt lighting and more. Some diagrams can be found elsewhere in the sections.
Covers some post-processing with corel draw, but more about artistic rendition than retouch, still interesting and quite artsy.
Pretty good book, raccomended along with "The art of children's photography", which is also very good on the business side, focuses on contemporary children photography and has diagrams (but fewer lighting setups).
