Just the lens I think I really need... Now, where did I put my credit card? |

This makes perfect sense since I bought mine in May 2009. Everything I buy seems to have a new and improved version hit the market soon after I buy it. |

Read the press release... it looks like they have made some nice improvements in a few areas. In keeping with Canon's recent track record, I expect the price to be a little bit of a shocker.
ETA: If the price is as I expect, there will be no deals at all on the original version. They will still go for 90% of new if in excellent condition.

makes me angry enough to want to switch to Nikon. How about updating any of the following:
24/2.8
28/1.8
28/2.8
35/2
50/1.4
... but they won't do that because they wouldn't be able to charge $1600 for them
pisses me off! |

24/2.8<< Upgrade to the 24/1.4!
28/1.8<< See above
28/2.8<< See above
35/2<< Upgrade to the 35/1.4! (but you knew that was coming ;-)
50/1.4<< I won't say it! But you *know* what I'm thinking :-P
Yes, Canon would *love* for all of us to upgrade to the latest L glass, and the pricing on same is outrageous. $2k for a 50mm prime? Come on! And it's not flawless. For that kind of money, I'd expect a lens I could use for astro work and get 10µm star images corner to corner. |

I would expect the new 70-200 to retail for about $2300.
I dont think the price will drop too dramatically on the older one as it is still a very capable lens. You'll still have to pay $1200-1500 for one methinks. |

I love my 70-200 f/2.8 IS lens. It's the lens I use the most.
I don't think I'll sell it to get the latest version. Now, if a f/1.4 version was released...well, that's a different story!

I don't know if anyone is still looking at this thread. But I just ordered a new 70-200 is usm because I was afraid the new price was going to be around $2,200 -$2,300, which really pushes it too high for me. I thought if I could get a new old one for $1700, it would be ok. Heck, used ones at ebay are going for $1600 by the time the bidding is over. Did I do a stupid thing not to wait because the price may fall? In the past, how do things go when Canon has an update regarding pricing of older models. I still can return mine as it is in the mail to me. Thanks! |

it'll hold its value fine. The 85 1.2 mk1 still goes for a decent price ($1300 or so).
L lenses retain 80-90% of their value upon resale. |
