When a muslin wrinkles, what is the most effective way to remove them? Iron it?

Botox.

Muslim background = Minarets? Oh, muslin. That's not the first time I've made that error!

Hope you find the answer to your original question, btw.

I saw on some website that throwing it in the dryer would unwrinkle it...but it was part of an ad for their backdrop kit, so I don't know if that works in general, or even if it could cause problems.

This article has some good information.

Creases and Folds – Your muslin backdrop will arrive heavily folded, as there is simply no other way to ship a heavy, bulky muslin backdrop. If you know you will not need to use the backdrop for several days, simply hang it on your backdrop support and allow gravity to work for you. If you cannot wait several days to use the backdrop or if the creases and folds are still visible, use a hand-held fabric steamer. I use a Conair compact fabric steamer (model GS4, est. retail $30.00) with great results. Follow the instructions included with the steamer and be careful not to rub the muslin with the steam head. In the absence of a fabric steamer, you can (if you are brave) allow your backdrop to lay outstretched on a clean, no-traffic portion of your yard overnight. The natural dew will help to remove most of the wrinkles and folds.

Ironing – JUST DON'T DO IT! Ironing your muslins will create noticeable, shiny hotspots in your backdrop and ruin the material.

Other tips I have heard of but not tried:
1. Put the muslin in a dryer with a wet hand towel. Remove and hang while still warm.
2. Hang the muslin. Spritz the muslin with water from a spray bottle. Blow with handheld hair dryer.

We usually just end up hanging a new muslin for a few days. The wrinkles usually just fall out pretty well. We store them balled up in boxes, so any wrinkles in them are pretty random and just enhance the background. It's just the straight line folds you have with a new muslin that are problematic.

I did a ball on Saturday with a new muslin. Luckily I had a big room to work in with a carpet. I layed it out on the floor and used a steam iron on the creases. Yes, it really sucked, but it worked. I have seen shots where the photog must have just crumpled it up in a bag then hung it and shot. It doesn't look too bad, but that wasn't what I wanted.

I've used those upright fabric steamers (the kind at the clothes stores) with good results to remove pesky wrinkles from backdrops.

Here's one.

The great thing about using one of these is that they are fairly mobile and you can have your backdrop hung up while you steam it making it a little less of a pain.

I'm getting the Shark hand steamer cleaner and it has an attachment to it that allows you to steam clothes.. I sure hope this works.. I can't believe the wrinkles in my backdrops and how hard it is to get them out.. I would like to just hang the backdrop for the shoot, THEN steam it just like you do...

I can say that I am an expert and different layers of blur at different opacity to get rid of the wrinkles in post.. LOL.. But, I would prefer to skip that step in the future..

You could just use a shallower DOF and throw them out of focus in camera.
