Just trying to get a feel for whether or not anybody would be interested in a Strobist-style GTG, all lighting & model oriented. I've watched videos of other group's Strobist events and they always look like a ton of fun and a great way to learn about lighting.

We'd obviously want a lot of shooting time with the models and lights - probably several hours worth. If we can include some lighting wizards, maybe we could even do a sort of workshop format. It might even be worth adding a post-production segment, where we can share workflow & Photoshop techniques as they relate.

Right now I'm just throwing out ideas as I think of them. I don't really have a game plan, just the notion that this is something I'd really like to take part in.

Since this would take a while to put together, I'm thinking the actual date would be sometime after the new year. I don't mind working to setup/coordinate it, but I would need some help doing so.

What we'd need:

- A venue; other groups have used empty warehouses, hangers, etc. Any large indoor space should work (preferably heated, since it will be winter). Perhaps even a school gym, community center, etc.

- Models; can't practice lighting without subjects to work with. I definitely don't want us all to get there and then have to take turns modeling. Models with a little experience would be best, I think, since they'd be able to help us out in terms of posing and whatnot.

- Studio stuff/props; I figure we can handle this ourselves. If each photog brings some stuff I'm sure we'll end up with plenty of, er... interesting things to work with.

- Photogs; definitely open to the DPC crowd, but I don't see why we couldn't include other photogs we may all know. Local club members, classmates, whatever.

I think the best way to start is to see who is interested. Once we get a feel for where people would be coming from, we could try to pick a central location.

So who's interested?

Interested Photogs:
eqsite
NikonJeb
AJSullivan
smichener
vikas
cryan (maybe)
rider
nshapiro
BackpackR
emorgan49 (fly on wall)
alanfreed (maybe kinda sorta)
haze
TonyT
robm001
Stinger

Hi, Brent. I'd definitely be interested in this. Not sure how much help I'd be in obtaining any of the needed items, but I've been following strobist for a while and been keen to try some of it out.

I'm interested, as long as I can get this one friend of mine to go. He works every other weekend, but he has the most terrific assortments of remote lights I've ever seen.

I'll go anyway, but I don't have much for lighting. I could most likely come up with a model or two, probably inexperienced, but fun and willing to take direction.

Depending on how far, I'd be game. I have my speedlights, plus my studio strobes with a vagabond.

I am really interested, its been a while since I have attended at GTG and after following strobist for a while, and failed home experiments, would love to go out and shoot with others! Again don't have anything to contribute for setup (unless a nikon SB-600 counts), but would love to help find models - modelmayhem is an option, starting a forum thread will be a good way to find some interested models!

Craigslist is another option, I have had some success in the past there.

If we do it in Vt I'm more than willing to come. I can get a lighting set up and might even be able to get together some models.

I know one (or both) of the dudes from Studiolighting.net live out towards harriburg, they seem like they are always game for events like this.

I'd be interested. Perhaps the NYC area would be a place to consider to get the most participation.

Great! It's nice to see some strong interest early on (and some old friends checking in)!

cryan, VT is a bit out of the way for...well, everybody. And I say that as someone who grew up there :-)

We well as letting me know that you want to attend, if there is anything in particular that you want to try and do, post it. I figure between the lot of us, we can pull off pretty much anything.

And nobody should feel like they have to own a complete studio setup in order to join in. A single off-camera light will work wonders. And if you have a hotshoe flash but haven't gone off-camera yet, a TTL cord is a good cheap way to make that leap. (The off-brand cords run about $30.)

I'd be interested! I don't know if I'd be available, or too busy, but I would try! VT's ok for me, as is anything within 1.5 or so hours from me.

Okay, even if we just got the folks who've chimed in already, I think we could make something of this.

One thing I did think of is, depending on what sort of venue options we have, it's likely we'll have to rent a space. Would everyone still be interested if there was a (hopefully small) fee involved?

I am still up with some (reasonable) fee involved!

1st off where do you want to rent a space and for how many people and setups?if there is only a half dozen people perhaps we don't even need to rent? i'd pitch in a couple bucks if necessary

Not sure on the where yet. I was going to give it a couple more days to see if we can generate more interest. But ultimately I'd like to pick somewhere that's more or less central to most of the people who are interested. Right now, that actually looks like it'd be somewhere between Binghamton, NY, and Allentown, PA.

I'm just afraid that finding a free space could be tricky. On the other hand, if everybody wanted to meet in Carbondale, PA, I'm pretty sure I can get us a gym for no cost. But that's a little off the beaten path :-)

This is great! You can count me in as well. I don't have much as far as equipment goes, but I might be able to borrow some things depending on what is needed.

Hey Jeb, If you are coming then let me volunteer to model. Would this be in a speedo or au natural?

Gotta be careful about that fly-on-the-wall stuff. Loitering photogs will be pressed into service as models :-)

Count me as maybe possibly somewhat sorta interested, depending on when and how far it is. I don't think I'll be driving to VT :)
