Just an idea, and it has probably been brought up before...

I was thinking that we could have an extra ribbon each week - photo of the week (from all challenges)

People have the chance when voting on challenges to tick the star button on their selected photo (can be undone and another photo selected if seen later)

The photo given the most votes would win the ribbon.

Rough idea but what do you think?

i think that is a good idea... POW side challenge... why not?

As long as it doesn't then turn into showdowns for "photo of the month" (or year), I'd support this.

how do you mean?

Also I was thinking it could maybe include photos uploaded to portfolios within that week too? this could highlight other photos not in challenges

I think if it was only for non-challenge entries to be showcased, that would be great. If it's just for the challenge entries, then you would probably just end up with one of the three blue ribbons getting POTW.

not necessarily. and anyway you would still get the "photo of the week". and if that what has been selected the so be it.

Here's an alternate idea. In one of the Flickr groups I belong to, we have a picture of the week. The previous weeks winner nominates 3 photos of their choice that have been posted to the pool. Members then vote. Showcases photos that meet the tastes of one person. Of course, since we already vote on challenge entries, the idea could be modified for DPC somehow.

nice idea. But I reckon having a whole community vote rather than having 1 winner select 3 is better

how do you mean?

I mean if we have a Photo of the Week, eventually someone will want to compare the four or five PotW winners from each month and choose the favorite for that month. And so on...

so what if they do? lets keep it simple as photo of the week.

My point exactly. :-)

Sounds like a great idea.

I'm sure it's not done in a snap but I can't see that it should be a huge problem system wise to add this feature. I guess it would be like adding another 'favorite' button and tally up amount of faves per week. The photog with most 'faves' wins the POW ribbon. The only difference from the existing button would be that each user only could select one favorite per week.

Users may start to ask for a way to see progress though and whether their picture has been selected... and how many times. But I think it would be resonable to make the voting process totally hidden until the results are published.

I agree; I dislike those sites where you are asked to vote on a favorite image, but where the most popular are on the front page, or where they show you the current tally.

In terms of the challenge/portfolio question, I wonder (asking AlexSaberi)... I like the idea of a simple checkbox to select a photo, but it also occurs to me that a randomly-sorted page of weekly nominated photos could work. Or is that making things too complicated?

The most popular photos of June 2007

1. The Lady’s Red Boots was unsurprisingly the most popular of the photos I posted in June. I guess the combination of red boots and grey and dull background grabbed a lot of attention!
2. Orange stripes and white clouds. I love leading lines, I love clouds. It was a beautiful day at the Conor Pass in Co. Kerry when I took this!
3. Children at play was one shot I really enjoyed working on. Bright blue sky, vibrant colours. Yummy!
