Hello all,
I was wanting to get some recommendations for "must see/do" in eastern Australia for the first 2 weeks in January. I am flying into either Brisbane or Townsville and want to see at least a few "jaw dropping" landscapes within 12 driving hours north or south. I am already planning on going a little north and taking a helicopter tour of the great barrier reef but what I am more concerned about is the stuff a little more inland. I understand the coast is phenomenal almost anywhere you go so that's a no brainer. I'm going to dedicate about a few days to just driving somewhere and running up on cool stuff but I think having a few planned locations to visit during my time there is wise.
There is a lot of things I want to accomplish on this trip but two weeks doesn't seem like enough to me, so I gotta make it count.
If you could post Wikipedia links (not blocked on military work computers) that would be great so I can research my trip while I'm on shift. I appreciate your suggestions in advance.
- Cory

I suspect you'll cram quite a bit in the two weeks, Cory. Should be awesome. I have no recommendations, but I spent a couple days in Cairns way back when and it was fantastic. Can't wait to hear about it and see your pics. Enjoy. |

When I went to Australia I arrived in Brisbane as well. I saw some nice urban landscapes, and I went to the Koala Lone Pine, which is a must see, you get to hold koalas and pet kangaroos, it's amazing! |

Judi - does that put you anywhere near Lightning Ridge? Fascinating Place.
One of the places I visited a bunch of years ago ...
And Fetor, any place you find to visit in Australia is going to be fascinating and photogenic.
ETA- If I used the word 'fascinating' too much, above, it is because it was the word of choice all the time I visited that beautiful country.

Hey everyone,
The Fraser islands looks intriguing, thanks for the links.
Judi, Thanks for the offer, I'll have to take you up on that once I have my schedule more figured out. What town are you close to so i can find out if its on the way from where I was thinking about going?

Cory,
The real beauty of Australia are the truly genuine and hospitable people. Make sure you are open to the experience. |

Frank,
You are absolutely right, the Aussies are remarkably kind people. Ive yet to meet one that is stingy about advice about Australia or their beer tab ;)
Judi,
That's not that far away from where I was thinking about passing through actually. I'll keep you updated, thanks in advance . :)
