Have any of you used (or do you own) an Olympus SP-590UZ? MY 20D bit the dust and I sold my 100-400L because I felt I could put what it was worth to better use given my limited photography activity these days. I still get a hankerin' to take wildlife and bird shots though. I'm thinking this might be a good option to see if I really get back into it before spending money on a new DSLR and Sigma/Tamron super telly. The 26x optical zoom on the camera works out to a 676mm equivalent and it's 12 mega-pixels. I'd like to get some decent prints at say 11 x 14 or so.

Does this make sense or would I be throwing money away? Is it good enough for a back-up or to carry when I don't want to lug a full kit around if I do decide to go DSLR again?

The Olympus UZ series is a similar class of camera to my Powershot S5. I have had equal success with my entries on this site regardless of whether I use my S5 or SLR. Three of the "highest rated" pics on my profile page were shot with the S5.

Biggest issue will probably be ISO noise in marginal conditions. When I look a little closer at my images from both cameras, they look great until I try to crop in close, then the S5 pics don't hold up as well. The large size prints you want to do will probably be fine with decent light and low ISO.

Another option: you could probably find another used SLR for the same money. When I did something stupid and killed my Rebel XT, I replaced it with a used 20D from another DPC member for less than a new superzoom would cost. (I still had the S5, so was not about to go shopping for another superzoom.)

Thanks for the reply Yo! Yeah, I can probably find a used SLR pretty cheap but I already sold my long lens. The Olympus gives me both a really long lens and a camera. It's good to know that the 20D still has better image quality at 100%, though.
