How do I find the total #shots taken with my D300?

I.m selling it and I want to let the future owner know how many shots were taken.

Thanks guys!

I'm not sure how Nikon does it, but for my Canon S3 it's recorded in the EXIF. My "regular" image counter resets once it reaches 9999, at which point it starts renumbering the folders on the card -- it starts with 101, then after the 10K actuations it changes the folder to 102, and so on. at the end of the EXIF is a separate image number which shows the total count, like this:

File: - M:\00_Photo_Folders\0910_Oct_Photos\091002\IMG_5633.JPG (this is how the file is named)

Make - Canon
Model - Canon PowerShot S3 IS

Image Type - IMG:PowerShot S3 IS JPEG
Firmware Version - Firmware Version 1.00
Image Number - 1045633 (this is the actual number of images ever shot -- 35,633 -- remember it starts with folder 101, not 100)

This can get screwed up if the same card is ever used in another camera without re-formatting, but if you've only used the cards in the one camera it should be an accurate count.

You'll need software to find this information. It's stored in each of your photos' EXIF data. Opanda for Windows does it, and it's free.

Thx Louis! That worked! :)

Count the bullets before you fire. ;-)

Another way to do it is use Nikon Transfer which should have come with your camera, You can also find the Exif data by viewing the original files in Adobe Bridge.

I can't be certain but Bridge doesn't show actuations or other "proprietary" exif data.

Hey all,

I know this question has already been answered for a D300...but I need to know the # of actuations for my D40, which in fact never had any software with it.

I don't know if the new Nikon software I got with the D90 will help me find the info. It is capable of doing so, what do I do - plug in the last known image taken with that camera and read the info from that?

Photoshop will do this for you too...
Once you've opened your photo, go to File, File Info. Then choose the "Advanced" Tab. Once there, you should open the dropdown that says "Schema(//ns.adobe.com/exif/1.0/aux/)
aux:ImageNumber is the actuation number.
I know this works in CS, but not sure of the other varieties.
You can also apparently view it on Flickr if you upload an unedited jpeg, and check under the "more properties," though I haven't done it.
I don't use the Nikon software myself, but could probably upload/check it later tonight if the above aren't options for you.

Thanks Spats, will go give the PS version a try.

Actually, because I last dumped out the D40 card so I could use it in the D90 this past weekend when I was in Ottawa, Ryan has the final batch of images on his iMac. He may be able to go to the last image and get me that info too. If not however, I can ballpark how many actuations, as I know there were about 300 shots on that card.

Hi Spats, very close but not quite. I have PS CS2, menu a little different. Got all other Exif type data, everything except # of actuations. D'oh!

Anyone else?

Did you try looking through all the data? In CS4, if you go all the way over to the RAW tab in the file info window, you have this giant list of junk. It's contained in there as well. I listed the more direct way to find it, but if you have the "RAW" tab, it might be in there.
ETA: Not sure if you need a RAW file to have this tab or not. Don't have any JPEGs direct from my camera with me.

Susan, I think you are a mac user right? Try this little programme. It only works with jpegs, but it works quite well. The number of actuations is listed.

Yep, I am a Mac user. WIll give it a try when I get back home.

Spats tried it your way off of a tiff file (I think). Do have the jpeg and the NEF. Can't open NEF files in PS. Again will try it when I get home. Thanks!

Gahhh... salmiakki, I downloaded and installed the tarball, ran it, and it opened a screen showing the pretty li'l picture...and nothing else. spiritualspatula, ditto. No luck.

But don't feel bad, I am just one of the technologically cursed, which is why I remain a technopeasant as much as possible!

Should I just provide an edjicated guess? So far I've said approximately 5000 actuations. Could be closer to 7000 but doubt if it's over 10 000.

Susan that's really odd. Do you have snow leopard? If not, then try an earlier version.

Or post a jpeg in your workshop folder and pm me the link and I'll tell you :)

Thanks, will pm you what I have. My Mac is running Tiger, 10.4.11, and my Preview is version 3.0.9.

If the camera numbers the image files consecutively and you are under 10,000 shots, then the image number should be the same as the number of shutter actuations. If you want to snap off an exposure in RAW+JPEG mode and send me the JPEG I'll try and see if IrfanView (a really nifty PC-only program) will see the shutter count.

Ok, will send you a jpeg off the D40 soon. Each time I put in a new card the count would just roll back to 0.

Thanks!

and yet it really was a lot more than that!

Uhhhhh....yeah...27,971 to be exact!

Think I *FINALLY* figured out where I went wrong. I tried to extract info off of images that were either RAW, or images that had been mucked around with (ie RAW-TIFF, Photoshopped, then saved as jpeg) and now I realize all I needed was a plain and simple sftc jpeg.

So dug out the D40, slapped on a lens, snapped a shot as a jpeg...and I just got the tarball to work for me, too.

Thanks very much to Sarah for helping me out and being so patient! :-)
