So, any of ya'll that are familiar with geocaching and/or groundspeak are undeniably also familiar with travel bugs.

I am thinking of starting a "shutterbug travel bug" and seeing how many dpc'ers could find it.

I know there are a couple of cachers here (clubjuggle and alanfreed come to mind), but are there enough to make this an even attainable goal?

I would start it in a cache near here that gets a lot of Interstate traffic with instructions that if you are a dpc'er, to please note it when you log the find as well as sign into a thread I would start on here. It would move as a "normal" bug, but hopefully get near another dpc'er along the way.

any ideas or thoughts?

A Blue Ribbon Bug? :) Sounds fun.
Doubt it would ever make it near my neck of the woods, though :(

I dunno. I've grabbed and dropped a couple that have been EVERYWHERE!

I may see what I can get started!

I've got a travel bug on the back of my SUV. Very few have actually "discovered" it.

I've been a very lax geocacher though. I've got someone else's TB, and keep forgetting to bring it with me to drop off somewhere. Heck, I was in Boston today (just over 3 hours away from here) and forgot to bring it with me. Any way I can mail it to someone and have them place it for me far away from here?

Nathan, in a situation like that, i would look to see if there were any TB hotels near you and just drop it in one. Even if it is a cache you've found before, just to get it back in circulation.

(I say as I've also got one I keep forgetting to drop)

I've been geocaching for a couple of years now. Though, I have slowed down. I even have a few of my own caches out there. I'd be in for it.

I'd say put in the mission to travel to other DPCer's. Attach a note that it's for DPC to grab. I'd hate to have one dropped near me and have someone else grab it.

These are my two travelbugs: Wilbur and Buford

Okay, I have plans to "launch" a TB or two (or three) in the next week or so.

It will "travel" like a typical bug, but will have instructions attached to it that if you are also a member of www.dpchallenge.com to snap a picture of it with you and post to a thread on here.

It will be departing Asheville, and who knows the places it will go!

I'll also let you know their "thread" so you can watch for them.

So what is geocaching?
08/13/2009 03:47:16 PM · #11
It's like a high tech scavenger/treasure hunt. People hide things, "mark" it with a GPSr unit, then post the coordinates for other people to find.

This site can explain it as well.

My daughter's Girl Scout troop is looking into doing a geocaching activity. The council even has 10 GPSr's that we can borrow for it.

I only started to get interested in geocaching when a few friends told me about the iPhone app Gowalla. Check it out if you have an iPhone, they use icons instead of souvenirs/trinkets/TBs.

I just signed up on geocaching.com the other day & so far have only found 1, but it is something fun to do with your spare time. I think it'd be great to have a DPC bug!

I geocache but I'll be surprised if the bug shows up in Newfoundland. I may do some caches when I go to NYC in September. You never know!

Of course I'm all for it :)

Please please please someone send the bug my way - we just are getting started. What a great family activity!! Can't wait to get our geomate jr. 2 days to go. I have the 1st Gen iPhone so I couldn't download the app - but just as well I didn't want my kids leading the hike with my iPhone in the woods anyway :-)

I geocached out in California, when I lived there. Nobody doesn't even come round here.

But, if it magically makes its way down here, I'd be happy to send it on.

Oh oh oh! Just saw this thread. If it makes it over toward Arizona, I'll definitely help move it along!

Geocaching is using a $200 GPS/Blackberry/Iphone along with billions of dollars worth of satellites to find a rolled up log book in an old 35mm film canister - and then signing your name on the log !

It's fun though...me and the kids do it. The best thing now is that there is all kinds of apps for Blackberry and Iphones that let you see all the caches in your area in "real time". In the old days, you would have to download a few caches and instructions and go on the hunt. Now, lets say you go on Vacation to the Smokey Mtns. You simply go to your Blackberry app and search your gps location. All the cache sites come up and you can look for them.

We even stopped at a rest area. Got the Blackberry out and found two caches !

Pretty fun.

The GPS software on my Blackberry sucks for anything other than driving. What nav/GPS software are you using?

I really like my Garmin ETrex H for geocaching. It almost never loses signal, even in my house, unless I go on the basement. The old one would lose signal if you looked at it wrong.

I actually use the free Nav4All and the free AmAze GPS software for Blackberry. Both work perfect but there are some "downers" but those are related to how you plug in info and not how the GPS actually works.

As for geocacheing on the Blackberry, download and try the Geocache Navigator. It will change the way you geocache.

OH yeah SPAZMo I see that your lil Bugs made it from MI all the way to the city right below me in Lake Wissota WI

This thread inspired my first geocache hunt today. Video here: //www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqf4OWDhawo

Also, I've ordered a bug, so I'll put a DPC note in with it as well. Who knows, it might even make the journey across the Atlantic at some stage...

My one piece of advice for you would be to look for a unit that uses the Sirf III ("high sensitivity") chip. Most new GPS receivers use this technology, but I still see older ones on store shelves that don't have this.

The reason I suggest this is that older units are particularly susceptible to losing signals under tree cover, near buildings, etc. I have one of the old Garmin yellow eTrex units, as well as a blue Garmin Legend, and neither of those have the high-sensitivity chip. My Garmin 60CSx and Garmin Colorado DO have the better chip, and the difference in reliability is dramatic.

There's nothing more frustrating for beginner Geocachers than to look down at their unit and see that it says they're 5 feet from the cache... then bounce up to 150', then 73', then 200' without even moving. The newer models are much better for grabbing the signals and holding them... and you'll enjoy caching much more because of it!
