I think it would be great if DPC updated their web site and got away from the light grey background and moved toward a dark grey to black background - at least in the challenge, galleries and portfolio sections. I have never understood this grey backdrop when almost all other image websites are white or some form of dark grey to black. I think it's time to update the web site for a more contemporary look. :) It doesn't have to be a massive update, just an enhancement. Anyone else feel the same way?

Sorry - there was a post regarding this in March, but I guess nothing has changed.
Even the grey at the Fred Miranda web site would be great though.

I agree.... I'd for sure like to see something more up to date and appealing to look at.. The grey and steel blue reminds me of the 80's.. Which happens to be my favorite era.. But, nothing wrong with changing the color scheme.. It's kinda like our own personal home pages.. Every now and then I change the colors so I'm not looking at the same thing day in and day out..

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

There are many higher priority things I'd like to see done here... a redesign isn't one of them.

Two examples of what I'd rate higher than a redesign: DPL and comment ratings.

If I want to redesign the look and feel of DPC, I could do so using Greasmonkey, or something similar.

When images are just being viewed then I would support a darker background.

For voting I think neutral grey is the appropriate choice. It applies no bias to darker or lighter images.

I like the neutral grey. If you tend to shoot dark, a dark background might not work so well.

I have to agree that for the voting pages, the neutral grey is appropriate, but I would love to see a darker grey on the profile pages or the galleries. Now...who has the dead horse icon, lol! ;)
And I also agree that there are other things that are more important for the site to be working on than the color of the background.

This has been suggested before but a great compromise would be to have the ability to set the style to your choosing in the preference page. Just being able to toggle the background color from white to grey to black on the voting page would be a great value add, IMO.

Here's an example of the latter. Below the photo there are three links for grey, white and black.

Anything but the voting pages might be OK -- those have to be the same for everybody to be fair.

Did you see the post after this one? They would all load under the same background. Then if the voter wants to see how it looks in white, grey and black there's the option to do so.

A redesign would be nice - any website should update itself within a 5 year period, if not sooner - and DPC certainly has not done that.

However, there are many, many changes that I think are more important to make, features to add to the site, issues to fix, projects to finally complete. Once those things are done, then is the time to worry about what color the page is.

What is it with black (blogger) backgrounds.... next step white writing.... and it burns thru my retinas :-/. At least make it user selectable....

Better features would be nice - an image search that attempts to search images instead of words would be nice. Better tracking of your own comments. But it works as it is....

I'd like it if users could custom select the colours as well.

Also, i would love to be able to see a histogram of all my votes from all challenges together, and a sortable list of members to see who has the highest average, who has the most ribbons, etc.

I love that idea by Yanko - where the user gets to toggle to the background they prefer. That link was great and seems so simple to initiate. Better yet, why not have background as a personal setup preference for the site. I also agree with OdysseyF22, a web site should be updated at least every 5 years to stay current in design and features. Maybe one day!:) From the looks of the comments, can't please everyone, but personal display options, outside the voting arena, would satisfy all it seems.

From everything that I have ever read, the most appropriate background color for viewing an image is a neutral-grey.

Using HSB notation, H and S are 0 %,

Photoshop : B = 75 % (window)
Photoshop : B = 50 % (main background)
DPC : B = 88 %
Neutral : B = 50 %

I know photoshop offers a quick toggle to black but I could never figure out the benefit of anything except a neutral gray color.

So, if anything is done, a standardization to a neutral gray on photo pages should be done.

Out of curiosity, why was 88 % chosen for photo pages?

Probably to keep the surrounding text legible. 50% gray wouldn't have enough contrast for white or black text. FWIW, Langdon has already been working on a redesign.

I wonder if Langdon needs any business logo design services?
